Title: Living A Healthy Lifestyle
Author: Shika Simpson

This was an interesting book about how to choose the healthiest food, with advice about habits to optimise health. I have taken much of what Shika Simpson says on board. She has taken time to research the subject thoroughly. It begins with the line:

'When diet is wrong, medicine is of no use,
When diet is correct, medicine is of no need.

The book is short enough to have my attention until the end. Yet, in many ways, some of her writing is old hat, well known, and already a part of most people's lives: sugar should be steered clear of, water should be drunk, carbohydrates should be looked into with more detail, and exercise should be a habit.

All the different components of what we eat are looked at separately, and some of it is quite eye-opening. Carbohydrates come in various forms, and not all are bad; the average adult's daily diet should contain 45%-65% of it. She discusses proteins and which ones to stay away from. There is a chapter about fats and oils, which I found particularly interesting, especially the facts about olive oil and how not to heat it to a high degree, as the nutrients will dissipate and the fumes are toxic.

We must also be careful of our environment. For example, the chemical used in dry cleaning, perchloroethylene, is harmful.

Fasting can be beneficial but must be done carefully.

I am definitely going to improve my diet after reading this book and will acquire almonds and broccoli as soon as possible!

Although it was stimulating, I feel that most families would find it hard to follow this book. Money is short these days, and many foods mentioned are costly, such as different types of rice, organic meat and veg, and top-end oils. Also, no one wants to be stressed, yet what can be done to ease it? It is part of life. The book is undoable for most people. Some pictures would have been nice. Because of these reasons, I will award three stars out of five.I recognise that the book was well edited and written.

Wow! This seems like a good book for one to have. Thank you for your honesty review. I think I will read it when I come across it.

Indeed, when diet is wrong, medicine and every attempt at cure will be of no use. I am happy that the book was well-researched and well-presented. Many thanks for the amazing review, @Rebecca De Figueiredo.

You've perfectly captured how Shika Simpson's research offers "eye-opening" details on diet, like the insights on heating olive oil. It's truly helpful to know about the book's actionable advice. Your point about the cost and feasibility for "most families" in today's economy is a crucial, empathetic observation. Thanks for this balanced take.
