“Crushing Low Stakes Poker: How to Make $1,000s Playing Low Stakes Sit n’ Gos” is a reference manual for those interested in taking their casual electronic poker playing to the next level. Mike Turner, the author has been successful in playing and winning at low stakes poker. In this book he looks at the key concepts involved in the game and goes step by step through the best approaches to winning for the long term.

I initially chose this book thinking that as a beginner I would get some useful tips that would help me improve my game and play with more confidence. In reading, I did get some great tips but more importantly I realized that there are beginners and then there are those of us that are more amateur than that. In order to easily understand the material presented here, the reader needs to have a basic understanding of poker language beyond “call, bet, and bluff”. Without this basic understanding there is still a lot that you can get out of the book, it will just take a bit of re-reading and flipping back and forth to the appendix to improve your vocabulary as you go.

This is a quick and useful read. The author outlines everything that he plans to discuss in the first pages and then in a very straight forward and practical way goes about discussing everything that has been outlined. There are several examples for key concepts with in-depth explanation of the what’s and why’s presented. The reader is left not only with an illustration of the point but insight into the relevance behind the point.

Perhaps the most useful portions of the book are the appendixes at the end. There are charts and graphs that the reader can refer to as they practice implementing learned skills. There is also a very useful section that reviews some of the top websites and resources for players looking to become more disciplined and improve their gaming strategy. For players such as myself who know less than what they thought they knew before reading this book there is a glossary of terms that made understanding everything in earlier chapters much easier.

I reviewed this book as a novice, one who only recently learned to play poker and wanted to get some tips to improve my game. As such I found this book to be thoroughly informative even though some of it was a bit above my skill level. The author’s easy writing method and the simple flow of the book made the information easy to digest. The author broke down concepts in a way that did not brag on his own skill. The apparent focus was on providing useful information to improve the reader’s level of strategy and skill. Overall this was a good read and will be useful to beginners and intermediate players. I would rate this book 4 out of 4 stars.
