Review of Embracing in His Grace
Pam J. Sherbia’s Embracing in His Grace is a beautiful story of survival, perseverance, and never giving up on God.
Cancer is one of those words that can strike terror in anyone’s heart. To be diagnosed with it is to be given the equivalent of a death sentence. Sometimes that is not the case, but it surely feels that way. To have a family member diagnosed is to envision a future without them immediately. Having faith in God can help to overcome these despondent feelings.
This story is about the author’s journey with cancer. She first watches as her sister fights and loses a battle with cancer. Then she receives her own diagnosis. After a successful surgery that removes the cancer, she begins the road to recovery. But her journey does not end there. Cancer is not done with her yet. But God is not done with her either. Through faith in God, prayer, and trust in those closest to her, she perseveres through everything and comes out stronger. Even after the cancer has been eradicated from her body, her fight is not over. And it will touch others in her life as well. Her view that you must overcome cancer, not just survive it, is a beautiful picture of strength.
Sometimes it is hard to look outside of our own situation. The bad thing that is happening to us in a particular moment seems to be the worst thing that has happened to anybody. Medical problems can feel like mountains that are impossible to climb. Faith and hope can become nothing more than words. Reading stories like Pam Sherbia’s can encourage us to fight for faith and never lose hope. Humans are resilient, and God is faithful. Facing difficult times is a test of will and a test of faith. Relying on others around us and giving our trust to God can bring us through even the most difficult times.
I would give this book 5 out of 5 stars. It is very well-organized and edited. The story is encouraging without being falsely optimistic. Even those who have faith can succumb. The important thing to remember is to have faith, and God’s plan will work out just as it is meant to. This was a very timely book for me to read as I face my own medical diagnosis. Though not cancer, it is still difficult to come to terms with. This poignant reminder to have faith is one I will not forget any time soon.
There is not much that I can point out as negative for this book. The only criticism I could offer is that it suggests that with enough faith, prayer, and trust in God, anything can be healed. Sometimes this is not the case, and even the most faithful can succumb to disease. It is just a fact of life sometimes. However, having faith is a beautiful thing even in the face of dire circumstances.
