There are so many reasons why life is worth living. Light in the Darkness: 50 Reasons and More Not to Commit Suicide by Dr. Robert Bentley III DNP, MSN, MPH, PMHNP-BC aims to remind readers of just that. This book contains 50 reasons to choose life. Each of those reasons is expanded on further with 10 additional points listed. It’s a quick and inspiring read that reminds readers that there is always a reason to keep going.

I think the greatest thing about this book is that you can open it to any page and find a reason why life is worth living. Each reason the author gives is short and to the point. There’s no need to spend hours reading in order to understand the message. The book doesn’t need to be read in order, either. You can choose any reason from the table of contents that seems the most relevant to what you need to hear at the moment.

I also liked how the author emphasized the value of seeking help. Dr. Bentley made it clear that reaching out for help is a sign of strength, not weakness. By being honest and open about your struggles, you can serve as an inspiration for others who are going through the same thing. Every chapter ended with a call to action for the reader to dial the 988 crisis line. I liked that this message was at the end of every section in large, bold font. It made it impossible to forget or ignore.

While I think there is immense value in this book, I didn’t find it very emotionally moving. After a while, the reasons began to feel like platitudes. Other than that, I have no critiques. The book was easy to read and professionally edited, with an overall message that I think anyone would benefit from. Therefore, I would give this book a rating of 4 out of 5 stars.

I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a reminder that life is beautiful and worth living. Whether you are going through a difficult time or could simply use an extra dose of positivity in your day, hopefully, this book will inspire you to persevere.

Indeed, there is always a reason to keep on keeping on, to press on. There is always one more reason to live even when all hope seems to have vanished and it appears the gloomy skies will never clear. I hope that anyone reading this and needing that reassurance will find hope to live. The good is that the author emphasizes on the need to seek help. Thank you for the review, @Maggie Johnson 2.

Taking about myself, sometimes living can be such a hard thing and start having suicide ideation. I have not done it because I am a coward and I have sliver of hope. So, I think this book was written for people like myself. I will read it because I am interested.
Thanks for writing a good review.

Life can get incredibly hard sometimes. One of the things this book reminded me of is that there are people that care about you more than you might realize. I hope that if you do ever feel like things are unbearable, that you'll reach out to someone.
Thanks for commenting on my review. I hope this book gives you something to think about.

When one learns of the suicidal intentions of a loved one, it is important, right there and then, to give that loved one a reason to keep hanging on. Causing a delay in their intent to commit suicide can allow for other arrangements to be made that will answer their need. This doctor has provided a valuable service in suicide prevention.

I appreciate how you pointed out its unique structure, allowing readers to jump to any section for an immediate boost of positivity. The emphasis on seeking help and the repeated call to action for the 988 crisis line are clearly crucial and well-integrated elements. I will give the book a try. Wonderful review.
