Crushing Low Stakes Poker Volume 2: Heads-up by Mike Turner is essentially a comprehensive guide on how to consistently do well in low stakes poker games. While most how-to poker books are written by professionals who are well known for crushing at high stakes games, this is the kind of book for the average beginner or recreational poker player.

This book takes you through the different strategies necessary to employ while playing low stakes poker games. This is Turner's second book in this series, which deals primarily with heads-up play. It covers fundamentals, theory, and strategies, while also taking a closer look at topics such as hand reading, manipulating ranges and post-flop play. Most importantly, the book covers how to become familiar with your opponents' strengths and weaknesses and how to use it to your advantage.

Considering the fact that I regard myself as a mediocre poker player, I tend to get lucky but am not very good at strategizing, I thought this would be a good read. Turner does a great job of explaining different strategies and approaches in a thorough, understandable way. He takes you through, step by step, without adding much fluff or unnecessary tangents.

At no point did I find myself irritated or bored, which may have to do with my interest in poker. The book was well written and did not read like a manual. Some how-to books tend to just bullet-point or list out steps, however this book goes through the causes and effects of different strategies, while keeping your interest the entire time. What I liked most was that Turner explained why certain approaches were better than others instead of just stating that his way was the best way. I will be honest and say that I was not familiar with all of the terms, but there is an appendix in the back, and I found myself referring to it often. Hopefully, I can use some of these techniques to crush at poker night.

Overall, I would give this book a 4 out of 4. It delivers exactly what it offers. Not only do you learn about general things, such as fundamentals, but you also learn about the smaller things, like how to read your opponent. I found it incredibly informative, well written and easy to follow. I plan to make use of everything it has taught me. Many other poker books focus on how to win a high stakes tournament, however this book is perfect for the occasional, recreational poker player who wants to crush it every time. Impress your friends, win some money, and maybe even get so good you write your own how-to poker book!
