From the Yoga Mat to the Corner Office: A Mindful Approach to Business Success by Yvonne James Furth and Molly Rudberg-Leshnock is a handbook to guide its readers for achieving work-life balance. This book tries to synchronize yoga practices with the business environment by using simple yoga exercises and the perspectives of successful professionals across professions. It aims at helping its readers reduce stress levels and increase productivity.

The book is divided into nine chapters, which deal with qualities like strength, flexibility, grace, endurance, etc, which help an individual in climbing the ladder of success. The arrangement of this book is quite innovative. Each chapter starts with a simple yoga exercise, where the steps to perform the exercise are well illustrated. The exercise is followed by a quote and then the main body of the chapter commences. Each chapter contains step-by-step advice for the readers, which incorporate the experiences of various professionals.

This book emphasizes on the mindfulness approach to business. Since I have practiced the art of yoga for the past sixteen years, this book really appealed to me. Though the illustrations are pretty good, I would like to advise anyone practicing those exercises to consult with a practicing yogi first. The authors of the book have chosen simple exercises which can be performed by most people. One impressive quality of this book is that the advice and tips given in this book will help people coping with any problem in life, and not just achieve professional success.

This book would really help in motivating people to incorporate the principles of yoga in their professional lives and look at their problems from a different perspective. The authors have effectively synchronized yogic principles with the perspectives of various professionals, which they have included in their book. I really enjoyed reading the quotes and examples given by various professionals as these added a different flavor to the book. There were some quotes which were quite thought-provoking, like this one by Aristotle, “The ideal man bears the accidents of life with dignity and grace, making the best of circumstances”. The book is full of inspirational quotes like these, which makes it an interesting read.

I have nothing negative to say about this handbook. It has something new, even for people who have been practicing yoga for many years. This handbook contains practical advice from people who have been there, done that. Their insights coupled with these simple yoga exercises makes this book an effective guide for people in all walks of life. I rate it 4 out of 4.
