The book reviewed is “Healing Feelings – Release emotional pain change your past & future Connect to your True Self” by author Geri O’Neill. This book is about the journey to connecting to your true self. A part of the journey is healing feelings that are blocking your growth. From a holistic perspective the book is reminiscent of the grieving process as it takes a look at the effects of denial, anger, blame, admittance, and acceptance on the journey to awaken the true self. The major theme of the book is that we all wear masks that allow us to hide our true selves. The author then walks the reader through the steps from removing the mask to acknowledging the true self.

I enjoyed several things about this book. The tone was very personable. The writer provided clear examples and relatable analogies. Additionally in each chapter there are practical steps for the reader to work through each topic. These steps include affirmations as well as meditation techniques.

I give this book 4 out of 4 stars. The author takes the reader along a clear path. It’s easy to read and follow along. Steps and examples are provided along the way to ensure that the reader can advance along the journey. This would most appeal to persons who like self-help books, as this is a personal journey that allows for introspection, healing, growth, and self-awareness. Persons who have already found themselves in the world and those who are emotionally closed will not truly appreciate this book. They will most likely look at the book the same way persons look at people that need a psychiatrist.

I found the book to be both interesting and instructive. Although this is not a new subject, as author Karol K. Truman has similar views as can be noted by her website, the author made me want to take the journey with her as my guide. Personally I tried quite a bit of the steps and did find a measure of peace regarding situations in my life. Although all of the situations I have not personally experienced as I read I was reminded of old adages and sometimes science itself. For example there is a chapter that speaks to the body mind connection it reminded me of psycho-somatic disorders. I’m sure we’ve all heard the sayings that everyone is carrying baggage, one’s perception becomes the reality, for every action there is a reaction, the serenity prayer, etc.

This is a non-fiction book that wants to assist readers in finding their true self. The author maintains that to find one’s true self you must remove your mask, look at your baggage, forgive and let go of past hurts, and accept the person you are beneath all of the many layers.
