Getting it by M.O
"Be the shark among sardines"
This is a career counseling and a personal development book.
The preamble is promising. It claims to teach you how to get what you want. The author does not beat around the bush in teaching you how to be free. He is blunt. Sometimes the book gets confusing, a little incoherent .
The experiences of the writer are scattered throughout the book. His realization that life is short, drove him to action. According to him, to win in life you have to take action. This is, plain and simple, the whole point of this book. To get where you want to go, you need to be honest with yourself. The book tells you honestly and bluntly, what you need to ask yourself, what you need to stop decieving yourself.
You need to unburden yourself from the problems that lay heavy on your chest. Start by digging deeper and finding out the real cause of your problem, then eradicate it. Only then, will you be able to move ahead.
Your goal planning and target setting should be like a pyramid. Identify the base of your problem in a broad and general way. Then decide what needs to be done, what you know and move to the specifics.
The author presents a logical, thought-based system to find solutions to your problem. The system seems promising, provided you understand all the technical tone used in description. It gets a little difficult to comprehend at first. Use of an illustration or an example would have been more useful to get the point across.
A list of jobs you can do which don't need a degree, is also provided. But its just a general outline.
The book feels like an advice. If you are looking for a step by step or complete day to day guide, this book is not for you. This is plain advice. Just like a father giving his son a journal full of his life experiences.
The author wants you to succeed but he does not tell you your next job. He can't. Every situation is different. But, he gives you a guide to handle any situation. The system of problem solving he provides, can be applied to any situation you are going through.
So if you are looking for advice, like a father talking to his son, teaching him about life ,than this book is for you.
My rating: 2 out of 4
I gave this rating because even though the tone of the book is conversational, the language gets technical sometimes. It feels disconnected in some places. And it seems like the author just wanted to get his ideas on paper, without caring about the flow. The concept is good. It just needs to be presented in a simplified and easy to understand manner.
