The author takes pithy vignettes from her life to share her story and the incredible transformation of the addiction treatment movement. These snapshots show the evolution of culture and society during in 20th century America. As one of the forerunners in care for families affected by alcohol addiction she had a front row seat for much of the changes that took place during that time period in American history. As she moves from small town rural America to the world stage we see the battles she faces being a woman in a “man’s” world, confronting the lack of understanding with regards to all kinds of addictions, and dealing with her own struggles. This remarkable transparent portrayal of her life from a firsthand perspective allow us to see “behind the curtain” a life well lived. It is an invaluable resource for anyone interested in the development of the treatment of addictions. It also serves as a model for other who would like to tell their story. Running ahead of the crowd comes naturally to the author, she is now showing the rest of us the way. Life well lived, Wisdom shared.
