After reviewing the preview, I agree with your assessment. You can tell a lot of effort and research went into this project. I can see this being beneficial for postgraduate studies, especially in regards to English/literature majors. I just wasn't drawn into the book.

Thank you for the revealing review. The book sounds interesting, but I don't think that quoting needs to be explained. Anyone who studies humanities, knows what and when to quote in regards to their work.

Great review. While this is a interesting topic, I prefer books that are a leisurely read.

I commend you, Rosemary, for tackling this book. I read some of it and it was quite interesting, but a little tedious to read. I noticed it was 205 pages and I was wondering how one could find so much to write about quotes and the use of quotes and the history of quotes. I was however intrigued by how much what we quote is a reflection of where we live, our families and family histories and our religion. Alot of good information was given in just the portion I read. The review of the book was really helpful and informative.

I am glad the author did extensive research for the book. On the other hand, the little that I know about quotations and citations is enough to help me get by at the moment, so I will have to pass. :lol2: Pity the book has grammatical errors. Thank you for the review :)

I didn't know that the act of quoting is a huge subject until I read the review. I would love to know how the author breaks down the context in this subject, which is why I will read the book to find out. Great review. Thank you

Rosemary Wright wrote: 13 Aug 2018, 12:42 Furthermore, the author's extensive vocabulary is impressive, but I think she should have matched her writing with a general reading level. Every reader is not an English language professor. If some readers can't understand most words in a text, they'll become confused and even disconnected. It'll be quite distracting for a reader to be looking up the meaning of words in the dictionary every minute. An academic volume should be easily understood by any person who chooses to read it. Anyway, this work is a mine of helpful information, and now, I know a lot about quotes. If you don't like complex books, then this particular one is not for you.
Many of us so often use quotations in our conversations and writing that it seems so happenstance, especially in today's world of memes. We get so used to using other peoples words we don't even think about it. Therefore, I found the premise of this book very intriguing. However, after reading a sample and reading your very thorough review, I believe I will have to pass on this one. I'm afraid I don't have enough interest or time to spend on reading any further than the small sample.

Interesting research, who would have thought that the subject of quoting could be a big deal.

Wow I didn't realize that there could be so much more to quoting than meets the eye. I thought quoting could be relatively simple but the author really did a lot of in depth research and analysis on the different ways of quoting. Your review is really engaging and thorough. Great review!

Thank you for the informative review concerning this book. I, personally, do not think that this book will be a good fit for me. I applaud the author for taking the time to research and piece together the information for this book, but this is not a subject that appeals to me. It sounds like a book that would be mandatory for an English major to pick up and read for a college course. I enjoy using quotes in certain situations but I don't find myself interesting in delving into the history and modern-day usage of them.

This is definitely for a certain group of people and not for the general public. Not a type of book I would read.

This seems like an academic book. Not for me. But if I had found this book back in college, I would've definitely read it. Great sincere review.

Thank you for your review =)
To be completely honest, this book is not for me.
After years in college, finishing my masters and for the first time in awhile not being a student - I will admit to having come to despise the use of quotes.
So many undergrads with no opinions or unique thoughts of their own - using quotes - because they cannot say their mind.
It just makes me sad.
