This memoir reveals the traumatic aspects the author experienced while leaving his country and taking refuge in the UK. The part of the story where the author meets his father on his deathbed seems emotional.

“The Reluctant Refugee” by George M. Decsy is a memoir that begins in 1989 when George receives a message from Hungary that his father, whom he never met, is on his deathbed. George, his two half-siblings and his mother escaped from Hungary in 1956. They met up with George’s stepfather in the United Kingdom. George takes readers through his childhood and he philosophizes about the role of a father being a sperm donor or the man that is there to catch you when you fall, if home is where we are born and if we are a product of our environment. An interesting read and a very good review.

I enjoyed your review. The central theme of the memoir, which explores introspection regarding the concepts of 'home' and 'father,' is undeniably captivating. I eagerly anticipate immersing myself in the pages to gain a deeper understanding of the author's life story.

I've just read the sample and the above review of The Reluctant Refugee So far. The author's lively and slightly sarcastic writing style is engaging. The reviewer writes - "It is honest, realistic, raw, and perfectly imperfect. This further peaks my interest as this book might give me some insight into a refugee's experience.

George M. Decsy describes in his memoir the harsh childhood he experienced as well as the challenges these events brought about in his life.
It's an intriguing story, and I'm glad the author shared it with us so we could be able to relate to him or perhaps gain a better understanding of the challenging circumstances that other people have to deal with on a daily basis.
Great review.

I love memiors in general, but I'm not excited about this one though. I like the family based storyline but I'm not sure if I'm up for a refugee story tipe memior as yet. Thanks for the review.

I can tell that you really enjoyed this book; the fact that you were moved by it means the author achieved his goal. Having read the prologue, which is when he finds out his father is dying, I, too, hoped that there'd be more to that story. Sadly, it seems there isn't. I might park this one for now.

The Reluctant Refugee

George takes us on his childhood journey for most of the book. Things takes a turn when George finds out that his father is on his deathbed he returns to Budapest to see him, being that he never met him this would be different for him. I find this read very interesting because it had to be hard to finally meet his biological father and the under the circumstances that he was in. Congratulations!

I rate it three out of four stars. I recommend it to those who appreciate memoirs and seek closure after traumatic experiences. While there are war scenes and descriptions of violence, they are not overly gruesome.
