The author questions whether our understanding of Christianity has been shaped by history and culture, hence diluting or skewing Jesus' teachings. He scrutinizes the New testament and points out discrepancies and points out the possibility of alteration, omission, or exaggeration of certain events. The book is thought-provoking, and will appeal to open-minded readers.

This is a really thoughtful book by Joseph Grogan. I love the concept and the thought-provoking ideas the author brings to light. What if our understanding of Christianity has been shaped more by history, culture, and interpretation than by the teachings of Jesus himself? This is a truly important question, along with his opinions questioning the inconsistencies in the New Testament. Great book! Congratulations on being Book of the Day!

I want to explore this book to understand the author's perspective on Christian theology, examining the scriptures through a logical lens. I’m interested in tracing the stories and writers to gain insight into their experiences and what has been documented about them. The author also touches on other religions, adding further depth to the exploration. Thank you for the detailed review and congratulations to the author on being selected BOTD.

I've only read the sample, but I thought it was fascinating. I didn't realize that there were so many discrepancies between the books of the New Testament, and that Mark actually should have been the first book instead of Matthew. I didn't realize that the ecumenical approval of the twenty-seven books of the New Testament in the 4th Centry AD almost didn't include Revelations, my favorite book in the Bible, the book that actually gives us the number of the beast. And like the reviewer mentions, what about the many books the early church leaders didn't include like The Gospel of Mary Magdalene and the Gospel of Bartholomew? There should have been a third testament for the rejected books. Can't wait to finish the book. I didn't realize that I enjoyed theological discussions, but I do.

The author notes that the Trinity, a central doctrine of Christianity, was not explicitly articulated in the Bible and developed over time through the influence of Greek philosophical concepts.
I find this detail interesting as a christian. The book has discussions about multiple topics that interest me in the bible .Doctrines are often ways of passing down traditions to the next generation . Questioning these means the person is showing interest to know more than following mindless beliefs. Thus questioning should lead to a better understanding of Jesus and the truth.

Whew! what a long review. I read everything and just from this review, I'm encouraged to read the book. Thankfully I have a copy already. I'm a open minded person and I'm always opened to the truth because that's what sets us free.
My only fear is not to be too bored by the book.
Anyways, Cheers to the author. It's not easy to come up with controversial topics in religion and deliver them well.

Hi @Black Indigo, I just read your comments on the official review of "CHRISTIAN ORTHODOXY" and while I agree the question is great there is so much more in this book. Having been baptized as a baby and raised as a Catholic there is so much more to this book and I recommend you read the entire sample to get a better understanding of what this author has found. @Mrlefty0706

CHRISTIAN ORTHODOXY: A closer look

I read this book with interest and tried to keep an open mind.

I found it to be very well written and researched, although at times it did seem to be more like reading a History book than a Theological one. That said, the development of all religions follow history and as Christians spread around the globe, so did their religion and their teachings, as we all know.

But here is where this author, Joseph Grogan, very cleverly inserts a WHAT IF :shock2: into the manuscript.

What if JOSEPH a key figure in the Christian bible, teaches us something slightly different? According to the author, Joseph was responsible for unearthing artifacts that could call almost all of the teachings in the New Testament into question.

There is much about this book that I found compelling and it inspired me to add a few of my own What If questions. I only felt that there was little or no need for such in depth examination of the examination of religious origins. Possibly the author had a check list if things he wanted to include, I just felt this part was slightly over done.

I think any modern minded Christian would enjoy this book and enjoy being able to discuss and dissect it around a coffee table with friends. No Religious discussions over dinner though please, there have been wars started that way. :no-spoil:
