As someone who comes from a place of privilege, I think this will be a very educational read for me. I am looking forward to it. Thanks for the review!

I must say, the 30-page treaty about another political scientist's work is something that puts me off somewhat. I do like autobiographies, but prefer if the author is someone well-known (for whatever reason). I'm afraid that despite your recommendations, I'll not go further with this one. Excellent review though; many thanks.

Its encouraging to read how someone accomplished so much despite the many obstacles she faced. And the bravery to share her story for others to gain wisdom from.

I like your review and the criticisms that you gave. I did not know that there was racism among people of color until recently. The racism that existed back then and today starts with colonialism. The European conquerors who came to what is now the United States, favored people who had lighter skin and looked more European. This resulted in certain groups of people within the same racial hierarchy being favored over other groups. The intersection of race and gender is apparent here with the author's struggle to be taken seriously.

The summary of the book, the way it portrays the author and this review is just breathtaking. I can only but imagine the inspiration, Janice S. Ellis must have provided to those around her and to the black race world wide. This is indeed a must-read. Thanks for the review. It was wonderful and well articulated.

This sounds like an amazing read. I'm sure this will be inspirational to lots of people to stand against various types of discriminations and not bow down to them. So, thanks very much for your lovely review. I'll definitely be reading it.

Ms. Ellis opening up about her childhood is demonstrating that she did not allow her circumstances to determine who she was or depict her future. You can either wallow in self-pity or pave your own way. Your review inspired me to add this book to my to-read shelf. :tiphat:
I have to agree that in order to be successful in life you either wallow in self pity or pave your way. Women every where around the world face abuse and some of them need all the help that they need. We as Women need to support each other. I am gratefull for the author story it will encourage other Women who are abused around the world.

I like that you shared what you learned from the read as for many readers who don't come from a similar background they may be wondering what they would take from the story. This is a great review and I like how you have described the plot in a good amount of detail!

The story is hopeful and inspirational, yet there are painful passages for both writer to recount and reader to absorb.

Totally not my type of book. And don't get me wrong, I have nothing opposite autobiographies as genre, it is just that subject of black South doesn't appeal to me in the slightest. Therefore i will skip this book. But want to congratulate with BOTD, anyway!

Is being black and a woman a curse? It is sad to know that this seems so. I have read many similar stories of POC's and women's woes, but still I am moved to tears. Will the world ever be fair to people like Janice?

Wow this sounds like an incredible story of how a woman has overcome diversity. Facing constant discrimination, it must have been so difficult to keep going. Thanks for the recommendation, it's clear how much this has affected you!
