Pineapple Sam, known as Ismael to friends, grew up in Hawaii with a loving mother and a strict, alcoholic father who became a devout believer and quit drinking. Ismael and his brother Hank often found themselves in trouble, earning frequent punishment from their father. He shared close friendships with Randy, Wilson, and Mando, who dreamed of touring the U.S. Sam’s life was full of adventures, preferring excitement over studies. One summer night in Kauai, while spear-fishing, the boys were terrified by a mysterious woman in an ivory dress, leading them to flee in fear. My favorite part of the book was its wide range of topics, including Sam’s tough experiences in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Vietnam War, which led many soldiers to PTSD. Despite hardships, Sam's humor shone through, and the book effectively tackled politics and family relationships. I appreciated the use of Pidgin English and the realistic graphics.

I was thoroughly captivated by Pineapple Sam’s adventures. The spear-fishing episode was particularly thrilling, blending an eerie supernatural element with the natural beauty of Kauai. Sam’s journey through the U.S. Marine Corps and the Vietnam War was both gripping and heart-wrenching, highlighting the severe impact of combat on mental health. The humor sprinkled throughout the narrative provided much-needed levity, making Sam’s resilience and mischievous spirit shine. This book is a must-read for anyone interested in personal stories that combine adventure, humor, and poignant social commentary.

Great review. Sam seems like a likable character that can teach someone temerity. His struggles with family issues and background in the army seems to have prepared him for their mysterious encounter in the bush. I hope to read more.

The title of the book made me smile. It reminded me of Spongebob Squarepants cartoon character. Both sounded similar. The pineapple image on the book cover clinched the humor further.
Anyway, 'The Life and Adventures of Pineapple Sam' by Pineapple Sam sounds interesting. I'd sure love to read about his adventures. It's even more fabulous that the book had such a commendable review and perfect rating.
