Congrats on BOTD.
The poignant memoir "Grief Is the Price We Pay for Love" follows Donnie Dawson's journey from 1950 until 2020. Throughout grief, family, an accident, and childlike ponder, Donnie's voyage offers a poignant examination of affection, resiliency, and the psychological toll of grief.

Losing anyone due to suicide can be devastating. I can only imagine the impact when it follows domestic violence. Thank you for your informative review.

The book sounds interesting, heartwarming, and very touching — but definitely not for me. Topics like suicide and domestic abuse are too emotionally heavy for me. Still, it's a powerful example of how someone can overcome the hurdles life throws at them, even at a young age. Congratulations on becoming BOTD!

Today's BOTD follows eight-year-old Donnie as she navigates the joys of childhood and the heartbreak of her father's suicide in post–World War II Australia. Despite grief and uncertainty about her future, Donnie clings to hope, love, and the possibility of a brighter path ahead. Thank you so much for your review! I've added it to my WTR shelf. Great work! :-)

Thank you for your review. I read the sample. It's a sweet and sad story about Donnie. I loved how the author told about her life, her parents, and her siblings. Her memory of seeing the Queen was excellent—a book anyone would enjoy.

Before commenting on the content of the book, I must say that the title of the book, Grief is the Price we Pay for Love, is one that is capable of beckoning readers. And the content of the book itself makes you stay glued to the pages.

I love how intentionally the author writes from the point of view of an eight year old. The diction is perfectly crafted in such a way that it fits the protagonist, Donnie, and makes the book more beautiful and real to the readers.

What is more, the intentionality of the author comes to play during the narration as well as the memories that are told and the ones the protagonist herself remembers are clearly differentiated. Her own memories of her life begins later.

In any piece of writing, painting a real and relatable picture is of utmost importance and Aimee Goodwin-Cole crafts a piece which the audience can easily connect with.

I appreciate that the reviewer included trigger warnings about the book, it is not done as often as it probably should in most books.

Nice review! The sample of the book told about the way that Donnie had to deal with her father's death, and going to his funeral. I don't think that children that young really understand death and what is happening around the event.
