Re: Review of Unexpected Lessons From Professor Higgins

Post by Rady Espinoza »

When Christopher was born, his mother was ecstatic and thrilled; the adorable baby was born with ten fingers and ten toes. She was thrilled to have her baby and didn't notice the nurse's anxious expression when she was informed that her child needed additional testing. Since the results would not be known for weeks, she thought the tests weren't urgent and her child was fine. However, when her son was diagnosed with Down syndrome and given a short life expectancy, everything changed.
On this book it examines how a mother can acquire knowledge from her child and how what society considers to be a distinguishing characteristic of their lives actually serves as a catalyst for a happier existence and a harmonious, loving family. The person think that by definition, the family was exceptional but they were not normal. The lesson are organized around her experiences as a mother to Chris, whom she frequently called him Professor Higgins. Also the book examines topics as self-discovery, forgiveness, growth, acceptance, patience, unconditional love, and dispelling stereotypes about people with disabilities.

A brave tale of the story of the pains and unexpected situations we go through in life such as the down syndrome conditions of Christopher. The challenging condition also mirrors continued life challenges that we meet in life as we attend to such conditions.

Thank you for your review. I sampled the book. I was mostly impressed with the author's perseverance and integrity, which she showed to her friends and family when she was given this special child. Chris is blessed to have a mother like her. Congrats to the author for the #BOTD.

Raising a child who is different, physically or mentally, has many challenges. Patti's love for her son led to so many precious experiences, e.g. their happy family life and what she learned from Chris. Thank you for your informative review.

Unexpected Lessons from Professor Higgins is delightful. The author takes you into her home and makes you feel like part of the family as she narrates the trials and tribulations of raising a busy family. This book will remind you of the simple things in life that truly provide joy. Every mom, dad and sibling can find a part of themselves in this book as the author journeys through the stages of raising a child. In this case, Professor Higgins is quite the child, and then adult, who can help to open everyone's eyes and minds to the meaning of family, fun, life's challenges, joy and love. This is an enjoyable and heartwarming book. It shares stories and thoughts that teach life lessons in a memorable way. I don’t have a child with Down syndrome, but I do have children, and this book was surprisingly very relatable! I was laughing and crying throughout.

The book sounds like an inspirational craft. From the summery I can tell that this book can change perspectives. It can change how people look at any kind of disability. And I love that about this book. It's definitely a worthwhile tale of resilience.

Non fiction books are not my cup of tea but the book sounds really heartwarming. When the author found out about her son's diagnosis she decided not to fall into despair but to live well and find joy in every moment of their life. Besides the topics like "patience, unconditional love, growth, acceptance, self-discovery, forgiveness, and breaking preconceived notions about disability" are very relevant. So I'm sure the book will find its reader. Congratulations on becoming BOTD!

" The book explores themes of patience, unconditional love, growth, acceptance, self-discovery, forgiveness, and breaking preconceived notions about disability". This is a beautiful and a reflective read, a mother advocating and educating the nurse about down syndrome got me asking myself lots of question. I enjoyed reading the review, looking forward to reading the whole book.
