Very heart touching story. Really it's hard for the parents to cope up with the ailment of Louis. It's clear depict of parents struggle and mental trauma for what their child is going through but still had a hope and fighting spirit to get his child back to normal.

First Survivor: The Impossible Childhood Cancer Breakthrough by Mark Unger is an inspiring and heartwarming account of a parent's journey through their child's battle with cancer. Mark's journal-style narration captures the emotional rollercoaster of Lou's healing journey and the family's relentless pursuit of the best treatment. The inclusion of photographs adds a personal touch, allowing readers to witness Lou's progress and growth. The author's advocacy for his son, challenging established protocols, and never giving up on searching for new paths is truly motivating. Despite some grammatical errors and technical descriptions, the book manages to instill hope and comfort for parents facing similar challenges. Lou's story of spirit and perseverance will undoubtedly uplift and inspire anyone who reads it.

This story reflects Mark's optimistic approach to dealing with his son's debilitating illness and how Louis recovered. The journalling of Mark about Loui's questions and the process of his treatment seems inspirational and would be worth reading for the parents who find themselves in such a situation.

Mark and Mary's struggles in finding the right treatment plan for their son Lou is sad and heart breaking. But the book also casts light on the plight of thousands that await appointments and referrals while dying slowly. This is the book one shoukd read when feeling lost. Thanks for the review!

It's always so sad to hear of a child suffering from cancer. There is no way that I would be able to read this book.

I think for every parent this must be the thing they dread the most. Their child being diagnosed with something as awful as cancer or any other serious disease. The sample was interesting and captivating so I'm definitely going to read this soon enough. Thanks for a wonderful review.

I find it so sad that parents (or patients in general) should HAVE to be advocates. Why should we be expected to research medical conditions and medications to be able to advocate a case to medical professionals who have decades of education and experience in the field? I feel for people who aren't in a position to educate themselves and be informed advocates for themselves and their children. We should be able to trust medical professionals to go above and beyond on our behalf, so it's frustrating that the reality is that results come as a result of patient advocacy.

It must be heart wrenching for a parent to see their son go through the disease. But all is well that ends well. Good luck to Lou. Nice review.

Thank you for the complete review. It brought back memories of a personal experience, so I understand the describing the list of medicines and dosages and the excruciating pains one may experience receiving them. It's a tale of a fight to survive where other's have lost. Regardless of the grammatical errors and descriptions I may read it.

"First Survivor: The Impossible Childhood Cancer Breakthrough" by Mark Unger is a heartwarming and emotionally charged true story of a parent's relentless fight for their child's life. Mark's journaling approach to document his son Lou's journey through a devastating diagnosis to becoming the First Survivor is both inspiring and touching. The inclusion of photographs adds a personal touch and makes Lou's progress more relatable. However, the book has some drawbacks, such as grammatical errors and overly technical medical descriptions, which can be distracting for readers. Despite this, the story's power lies in the unwavering advocacy of Mark and Mary Ellen for their son, challenging established protocols to save his life. Lou's resilience and the Ungers' path to advocacy serve as an uplifting guide for anyone facing a medical crisis. Overall, "First Survivor" offers hope and comfort to parents dealing with similar challenges and highlights the importance of questioning and seeking new treatments.
Sincerely,
Sondang :tiphat:

Mark Unger along with his wife Elen seems to have done well in capturing their experiences and their son Lou's childhood cancer in this intriguing book on from no hope to be a first survivor. I like the point that to do careful research and sometimes be able to go against the medical procedure if there's a better option is so important. You have written the review so well. Congratulations on the BOTD!
