The book, however, has some flaws. In the first place, the author affirms in all letters that marriage is an institution that is oppressive to women. This generalization may have been true in the past (maybe it still is in some parts of the globe), but to say that all women are going to be oppressed and become unhappy if they get married is entirely absurd. This argument does not hold water.
I agree with the reviewer on this point. Saying this about marriage applying to all women is saying that all men are oppressors. I don't this statement to be factually correct. I also agree with the reviewer on it being true in the past. Women weren't always allowed to pick who they married. This was cause for oppression and unhappiness. Overall, great review! I enjoyed reading it and it opened my eyes to this book.

This summarizes the complexity of the human mind. Being a civilized people that are spiritually imprisoned by force of laws *laws of man* not laws of God or a spiritual entity most seek in a time of despair and misfortune. The institutions that deny us access to our innate emotional intelligence are the invaluable resentments most burden themselves with on a daily basis.

I think the author's assessement of marriage is come from personal experience. The civilization's society is part of human nature. That could bring us both good and bad impact on human behaviour. I like the idea of 'life in the present'. I want to know more about the Piraha. It is such a mind-blowing to read a book that talks about spiritual and mental health from an alternative perspective. Thank you for a great review.

All we have is this moment and sometimes we do forget to live in it because we are worried too much about what's next. I love the philosophical notions in this book that are created to awaken the reader's minds.

From a sampling, this seems like an interesting book focusing on the idea of "civilized" human nature and the issues about "individualism" and a focus on the future by losing the present. It might be worth a second look. Well done.

I like that the book goes over things that are often overlooked by other self-help books. Though I find self-help books not really useful for me, I think others would find this beneficial.

I feel that the author's vague notion on what the "loving future" would look like doesn't speak well for the amount of thought he put into this book. I believe that if you wish to challenge the system you need to have an idea of how to fix what you feel is wrong. I would agree that historically, marriage doesn't seem to be a concept that was deigned with a woman's happiness and peace in mind, but I feel that newer generations have started to fix that. So saying that every married woman is miserable is a bit of a stretch.

I can tell right now this is not a book for me. The idea that I am "oppressed" because I am married or that planning for the future is wrong, are, to me, inane points. Thank you for your great review, though! You did this book justice, in my opinion.

This book addresses some fascinating questions. I think that even the term "civilization" has some historical problems, and our attempts to organize nature aren't always what we hoped. I'm very interested in the Pirahã and how they contribute to the author's ideas. Thanks for the balanced and thorough review!

I don't like self-help books but in the sample the following phrase caught my attention, 'modern life, in fact, is a dessert for the soul'.... This made perfectly sense to me and I curious what else the author has to say. Thanks for the great review.

:) The review alone made me think how I plan my life and my days, do I realy give more time to think about my future. Im realy interested to read this book and find out more about human nature. I mostly skip these types of books thinking that I know what I'm doing, but today after reading this review I realized these these types of books are eye opening.

I dare to disagree with this review. This is the author's work and should have been reviewed and not altered. Granted that the reviewer may not subscribe to the author's ideologies, they still remain his, and the author's ideologies are the author's.
It is interesting to see the disconnect from the authentic self even in this review. I may not agree with everything that is written in this novel but I can appreciate the view from which the author speaks. This is definitely a novel to take from it what works, and keep moving forward.
Congratulations to Chet Shupe for being selected as today's BoTD.

This book reflects light on how important it is to be in the present which is marred by the growing civilization. Can't wait to read it. Congrats on botd.

This book seems to be a magnificent book since it happens to be a self-help book. I do agree that due to civilization we have lost how it really feels to live in the present. And i do agree with your disagreements made. Thanks so much for this review and congratulations on BOTD.
