What was the most interesting point made in the book?
What is grief, if not love persevering?
Grief is just love with no place to go.

In the final chapter the author explores the ecological impact of overpopulation, which nicely sums up the entire book. While having children can be the responsibility of an individual or a group of individuals, it is also be the responsibility of the planet and we need to think about the ever-increasing number of people which is affecting our planet and, in many ways, our health. Having children has much wider implications than simply giving mummy and daddy something to do all day.Graverobber wrote:I'll take that challengeryanj1 wrote:I think I'd like to see more discussionGraverobber wrote:Definitely discussion worthy

A very good point. But I have nothing to say against itryanj1 wrote:In the final chapter the author explores the ecological impact of overpopulation, which nicely sums up the entire book. We need another question

What is grief, if not love persevering?
Grief is just love with no place to go.

Thanks, Tanaya. The subject matter of this book definitely caught my interest. You bring up important criticisms that are good as a heads up but wouldn't deter me from reading it. Great recommendation.

It's too much fun, though, to practice retorts for these occasions. (And this may be the reason no one ever pressures me.)

"You should have kids."
"OK. Will you birth them and raise them for me?"
"Why don't you have a second child already?"
"There's nothing wrong with my first one."
"Are you pregnant?"
"No, just fat. Thanks for the reminder."
And my personal favorite...
"Was it a planned pregnancy?"
"No, but thankfully we caught the whole thing on tape."
(I know I've put that one somewhere else on the forum, but it bears repeating for anyone who's ever asked that question!)
"Your kid doesn't resemble you. Who's the father?"
"I'm not sure. The time of his conception was a busy week for me. It may have been the plumber."
"You do realize that your biological clock is ticking, right? Women who wait until their forties have more complications with a first pregnancy. And I'm only saying this out of concern. Deep, deep concern."
"No worries. I plan to conceive in my fifties."
Anyways, great review, Ryan! It gave me a good feel for this book.

Nice selectionzeldas_lullaby wrote:Wow, great review! I believe that this book raises valid points, although no one has ever said to me, "Why don't you have kids?" Or even, "Do you have kids?" And I'm 38 years old. Whatever this "pressure to procreate" is, I've never experienced it. Go figure. I almost don't even believe that it exists.
