Sounds like an incredible story of perseverance and struggle. Thanks for your review!
You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

The hardships and racial discrimination the author had to go through are heart-wrenching. She made her life with her hard work and determination. She had the courage to face all injustice. It's a wonderful review.

This book sounds beautiful and inspirational. A memoir about a woman facing poverty and racism sounds absolutely incredible, and I am sure that this novel will get me emotional. Congrats on BOTD.

As like you, I didn't ever face the issue of Racism and Sexism so far in my life. We got to live in Freedom, so we can't feel the pain of going through this raw issues of the society without facing it; however we understand & sympatize with the pain struggle of Janice, and learn & inspire a lot from it. That's why, I'm gonna read it.
A wonderful book and a cup of black tea in my hands make my day joyful! :tiphat:

This review highlights the strengths of this book well. It's inspiring to read about individuals that rise above their circumstances. This autobiography of a black woman growing up during segregation looks compelling. Thanks for the recommendation!

This seems like a very well written memoir of a woman battling sexism and racism. Readers who like non-fiction with strong protagonists as woman are sure to love this one. Thanks so much for a thorough review. It does sound, one strong and powerful book.

This is another sad story of how people suffered because of racism but this one is double sad because of gender. The good thing is that hardships gave the girl the drive to work extra hard and do better in life. In a way, it is a motivational book to me and, I believe, many others. Good review.

Terrific review, Kislany. Thanks. It's a very uplifting story and the world needs Jane S. Ellis who can tell it. A strong and loving family is the key to many successes. I loved Dad saying of Jane, "This chap cannot go to the fields anymore". This chap stayed at home and read books and thus began Jane's many successes.

My mother grew up in Mississippi in the late 40s/50s, and I've heard several of her stories about the descrimination she endured. Oddly enough, she moved back there after retiring [from teaching in Ohio, where I was born] in the late 90s.

Still, I don't care for memoirs or autobiographies, especially if they involve prejudice and racial tension, so I'm giving this book a pass.

The fact that she was at a double disadvantage and yet she overcame all the obstacles and kept her head in place is just commendable! An inspiring book with almost perfect editing is like the best book one needs. Amazing review!

I have a lot of respect for Dr. Ellis and women like her, women who have helped pave the way for so many coming after. I am very interested in this book. I will have to check and see if there is an audible copy, as this is the type of book I love to listen to.

Based on your review, the author seemed to have struggled so much fom racism to abuse. This also sounds inspirational and motivational for readers, especially people who have been through the same. Not really a fan of autobiographies but I can feel the overwhelming positive energy this book has on your review. Also, glad to see that this is professionally edited!
