A truly inspiring story. Love that it includes snippets from the process itself. I applaud the family for sharing their story.

After reading your review, I feel encouraged to finish reading this book. I can relate to the rush of emotions felt and being moved to tears, as you mentioned. One can only imagine how Lou's parents felt throughout this ordeal. I am also glad that you mentioned that this book can serve as a guide for other families. This, and the fact that they moved on to create a foundation and became advocates for other children inspired me to purchase the book.

I like that parents have the courage to share their journey with the public. You can feel the raw emotions just by reading the book. A story is better told from the perspective of those that have experienced it.

Great review! There’s still so much work to be done, but when it comes down to it, if we don’t have any true hope of demolishing cancer, we’ll never get anywhere.
During this whole ordeal, Mark’s method of handling this overwhelming situation was to keep a journal of his questions, feelings, Lou's treatments, medications, and comments on Lou’s progress. The journal was a log of his observations, investigations, and determination to search for the best treatment possible for his ailing son. It became the foundation for his advocacy for his little boy and his relentless search for a new medical path to conquer childhood cancer.
Such a serious medical battle will always bring forth highly distinct similarities and differences amongst individual cases. I believe it’s by gathering information in this way, it makes it easier to bring everything/one together and make more necessary connections.
Mark and Mary Ellen were acute observers of their son’s health. On several occasions, it was their advocacy for their son that convinced the medical staff to hear their pleas for immediate treatment outside of the established protocol. They didn’t let the doctors’ diplomas, titles, and white coats intimidate them.
This very sort of advocacy is more probably relevant now than ever before, and will only continue to become more so. The more people speak up and stand their ground, the more we all can find and get exactly what we need.

Based on the description, I think that the reader can follow the story of the child and the bitter struggle of the parents firsthand. Whatever the ending of a story, I think everyone will feel at the end how lucky they are to be healthy.

From a sampling, this seems like an interesting memoir about a young boy’s recovery from cancer told from his parents perspective. It appears to be worth a second look. Well done.

What an interesting story. The journey of Lou's seems quite challenging but on the other hand sounds an encouragement to those who may fall in the same situation. The determination of Lou's parents to see they have gotten the best treatment for their son is much encouraging and gives an impression of the love towards their son. Thanks for the great review
