Moving to a new country is always scary. I applaud the author for telling his mother's story. However, I'll have to pass on this book because I don't read non-fiction.

I think this is a story straight out of a Filipino afternoon drama, full of twists and heartache that will capture its viewers. While I do think that this would be an emotional roller coaster read, I am already fed up with such stories that I am not interested in reading anymore stories about the familial affairs of fictional characters. I think many other readers would enjoy this, but this is simply not for me at the moment.

Thank you so much for the review!

This true-life story features the Ortiz family's struggles as they immigrated to the United States. It seems that the family and especially Mary went through very difficult situations. Sound interesting.

A book about family and tragedy. Although it seems entertaining, I'm not really into memoirs.

Thanks for the well-written and informative review. Seems like the story of a Phoenix. Mary's rising beyond her dark clouds is quite inspiring. I'd also like to see the choices Gregory made that led to the separation of his family and whether little Maria completes her quest to unify it. Congrats on the BOTD!

This book is a true story about a family that moved from Puerto Rico to the United State in search of a better life. However, disaster strikes and the kids in the family are relocated to different foster homes. The story then focuses on Maria's challenging life and her quest to reunite her family.

I am intrigued by this title because what it states is an observation made by all and makes sense, yet something about it feels like there's more to it and that it is poetic. I am fascinated by the story of the immigrant family that is tackled in this book. Congratulations to the author for BOTD!

It's hard moving away from what you are use to, leaving all of it behind and starting over in a new place. It takes time to adjust and familiarize yourself with the new environment. Mary went through some painful challenges but at the end, she was able to forgive, something that is so hard to do sometimes.

Oh how heartbreaking. A family of seven having moved to the United States of America from Puerto Rico are torn apart as the children are placed in different foster homes after tragedy hits their family. One of the children Maria suffered pain and abuse at her foster home. Dispute this, she set out in a mission to unite her family. Will she be successful? I HOPE SO.

Following the recommendation of the reviewer, it seems the book is not meant for me. However, I like the theme of forgiveness that the author emphasized in the book. I wish to congratulate the author on being the #BOTD!

I imagine that for a young family man, fearing for the future, the lure of promises of an easier life would be very tempting and so easy to neglect to think about the cost of that decision. I believe that letting go of the pain enables a person to find forgiveness, which then leads to healing. I will enjoy reading the rest of the book and finding out how the children grow and come back together as a family.
