I'm ecstatic the author thrived/ is thriving despite her challenging childhood. Her life is a testament that one can overcome difficult situations with determination and hard work.

A well-written review. I like reading biographies, and this seems like a very important book, particularly given the resurgence of racist and sexist rhetoric in the United States at this time.

This book is a must read. It is the winner in two different categories for "Gold Winner," an honorable mention for "Gold Winner" in a third category, and a featured review of Kirkus Reviews. As racial, gender, and sexual discrimination is still alive and well today, this book is a beacon of hope and light that it is possible to overcome it all in pursuing personal dreams. Great review!

This book sounds great and very informative. Our history is not the something to be too proud of since discrimination has been so prevalent. However, it is wonderful to read the stories of those that have risen above it and in spite of it to succeed where many don't, regardless of race, color, or gender. This sounds like a good one!

I feel sad whenever I read about discrimination in America based on race and skin color. It must have been very challenging for the author to come up in life. Thanks for the review!

Many of the stories Janice recounts were truly sad and some quite cruel in the way white people treated blacks back then. I am coming from Europe, so racial issues as such were never part of my life. Thus, I found at least the first half of the story shocking. I couldn’t stop shaking my head whenever Janice would describe yet another injustice done to her and her family just because their skin color was different. In addition, I learned that not all blacks were equal either. Even among people of color, their shades gave them different social statuses.
I understand where you're coming from. Racial issues are not a major problem in my country either and I often have trouble wrapping my head around how people can hate others just for the color of their skin.
I'm amazed about a radio host making such a strong impression in the author. It's remarkable how some people change our lives without even knowing it.
An amazing, thorough review, thanks!

Although I don't really like to read about racial wars, this book seems to be more like a memoir, and those I like. Especially about strong people who overcame such obstacles like skin color or gender in 50s and 60s.

This is a fantastic and informative review. As a woman of colour, this book resonates deeply with me. It is inspiring to see a strong woman who overcame sexism, segregation and such inequalities to become successful. Janice S. Ellis is a heroine in my book. I am adding this well edited book to my library for the inspiration.

I've never tried autobiographies and this sounds like a sad and bitter story. I Would love to read the book, but can't because the story seem to be too emotional.

I really appreciate the amount of detail the author out into the story. I felt connected to the story and like I could visualize the setting.

This is an excellent review and I am definitely interested in reading the book. The book speaks volumes and the review, I believe has captured the true essence of the book. It has touched my heart and I believe it can create awareness of issues like racism and gender discrimination. This book can also inspire many persons to never give up.
