Authors love to write quotations, at the beginning of each chapter of their books and we read the quotations with great interest, but Ruth Finnegan has written an entire book on the topic of why do we quote?.

Ruth Finnegan has written many examples of literary work in this book, about the use of quotations in different religions and cultures in the world, and this book enlightens us about the quotations.

A very helpful review. I agree that books should be worded at the level of the intended audience. I'm unclear who exactly that audience is, in this case. While I wouldn't mind learning about the history of quotes, I'm not all that interested in the textbook method. Most textbooks put me to sleep.

Such an awesome book! It is so unfortunate that the rating is poor due to the editing that was not properly done. The author should consider editing this book again. It is a unique work and the author deserves a pat on the back. I enjoyed reading your review.

I am sure that the author has invested a lot of time and energy for this book. However, I do not think that a book about citations and quotations would hold the interest for many for a long time. Anyway, the concept sure is out of the box.
Thank you for the great review.

I am sure that, with editing, this could be a useful book to graduate students interested in the origins of quotations. I, personally, do not mind a writer that uses big words because how else are readers supposed to increase their vocab skills? However, it does tend to make a book read more like a textbook than a novel.

This sounds like a book I would adore reading. I haven't given too much thought to quotes, but perhaps I will check this book out and take a look for myself. Thanks for the review!

Rosemary Wright wrote the official review of the book"Why do we quote" by Ruth Finnegan. I read the review and it contains a lot of material related to the speech in English. Although it's not totally an academic subjective book but it contains a huge grammatical material including the use of citations, phrases, idioms etc. This book will be greatly helpful for the students of English language courses and the readers interested in reading English speaking rules.

Thanks for review of the book that tells us about act of quoting and it was quite surprising to know that it is a huge subject and author Ruth Finnegan did a vast research on this. As you mentioned this book is eloquently written and it is educative and engaging, I think i should be definitely reading this book soon.

I will be adding this to my reading list. It's quite insightful to learn about quotations. However, this is not something that I would be reading like I would read a novel. I would read this book to look into some quotations that I want to know more about. Thanks for the great review.

I must admit, I love discovering definitions and derivative of the English language and this does look very interesting. However, if anyone is going to write about the English language, they should ensure that the editing is impeccable. I also struggled with ’page blindness’ used by the tiny font in the example.

The reviewer is right the book is difficult to read. It is definitely more in a line of a textbook than a casual read. The little I read I thought you really have to take your time reading a book like this. I think you will learn a lot if you make the effort.

I have read the sample and I had no problem understanding the author's language or ideas about quotations or the quoting process. On the contrary, I think she did her best to use a less formal, conversational tone than it would be normally expected in an academic book. I think this is quite an interesting and eye-opening book.

Learning about quotations is not a bad thing though I do not think this book would be my cup of tea. It's quite educative for those who would enjoy this genre. This could help much English students because it defines much about the sayings and quotations. Congratulations to the BOTD.

Thank you for taking the time to read and review this book. I hadn’t heard of it but I think I will look it up. I love learning new words so if I need to look a few up I don’t mind but the overall topic interests me.
