How could one survive this? Christina was only four when her stepdad started abusing her sexually. At that age, how could one fully comprehend the effects of such abuse? If only her mom could help her out of this, that would go a long way.

I want to read this.I was initially skeptical about doing so, but your review did justice to this story, and I can't wait to get started.

Poverty and frequent moving have lasting effects on a child, and to add to that, sexual abuse is horrific. Every child deserves a loving family and to be enveloped in care. I thank the author for bringing her story out to readers and spreading awareness about the lasting impacts of sexual abuse.

This looks like a very intense book. Because of the subject matter I will give this book a miss.

Your review resonates with me, Alys. I sampled the opening scene at court when Christina, aged four at the time, lied to the judge and so enabled her adoption by her abusive stepfather. This feels like a challenging and thought-provoking read, and I agree with your thoughts that children can unwittingly self-inflict trouble onto themselves by trying to please their carers.

"Every 9 Minutes" author Christina Vitagliano's early childhood experiences are difficult for any young individual to bear. I empathize with her and am equally relieved that she is no longer confronted with the obstacle. I trust that she will recover fully. Congratulations on your Best of the Day. An excellent assessment.

This book is the toughest book I've ever had to read. Sexual abuse, written through the eyes of a child, is a new approach to giving readers who don't know much about it, a little glimpse into what it's like. I am angry for this child and all children that have gone through this. Everyone should read " Every 9 Minutes".

Christina Vitagliano tells a compelling and tragic story about a trusted adult abusing a child in Every 9 Minutes: A Memoir. This sad fact occurs much too frequently and is routinely overlooked by those tasked with protecting children. I applaud this courageous young lady for sharing her tale, and I hope that others who have experienced similar horrors can find comfort and support in it.

I don't care much for memoirs, and I dislike reading any books featuring sexual abuse. I applaud the author for getting her story onto the printed page, but this book isn't for me.

The review is thorough and well-written. Even after maturity and understanding things, it is still difficult to discuss such matters, which makes it brave of the author to share her memoir. No child should be deprived of his basic rights, including safety. My appreciation to the author. Congrats on BOTD

This book is an expression of unfortunate events that played out in the life of the young Christina on her way to maturity, It's sad, emotional, and an unpleasant experience that could haunt one's memories for a long time. I'd love to learn about the woman she became at the end.

It is very possible to build a life of purpose and happiness after years of sexual abuse as a child. What captivates in the book is its power to tell a story from the point of view of the protagonist as she is growing up: so much can be learned about how children deal with abuse and its consequences when they become grown ups.

It is very easy for memoirs and personal accounts to fall into the trap of being overly sentimental, poorly written, or boring. "Every 9 Minutes" is none of that; it is well written, heart-rending, eye-opening, moving, sad, and sometimes even funny. It covers a topic -- childhood sexual abuse -- that is too often covered up, ignored, denied, and considered an improper topic of conversation in polite society.

This book has been on my want list for a while now. Finally got it. The subject matter, tho dark, is something that needs more light shone onto it. This review has helped me to understand that going into the reading of this book, I will see changes in how the author presents things. That is helpful to know.

Sorry, I am not the biggest fan of memoirs and especially if sexual abuse is involved. I am not able to read such stories knowing the real tragedy is behind them. No offense, but I will skip this book. Congrats with BOTD anyway!

Definitely not my cup of tea. This book contains heavy and sensitive topics. It is so hard to read such story. I appreciate that stories need to be told. It is not for everyone to understand and relate. But it may help the victims to open up. Thank you for a comprehensive review.
