I always like books that celebrate artists and their work. They add colour and meaning to an otherwise dull and meaningless humdrum. But the title, The Negative Shape, is pretty vague. I wouldn't know what the book is about by just looking at the cover.
I write the best reviews possible. :idea2:

I'm impressed that this reviewer had the patience to read past their initial confusion at the beginning of the book, enough so that they were able to give it such a perfect high rating. From the book's extremely poetic description that I read on Amazon, I'd think that this book would be quite enjoyable. It's not a book of poems, but it has some pretty tough concepts it's trying to make appealing. From this reviewer's conclusion, I'd say the author succeeded.

The negative shape may involve art but the concept can also be applied in life. Not every stroke of the brush may go as an artist wanted just as life is at times. But those imperfect details make life more intriguing.

Sorry to say, but to be honest, the described in the book concept of observation and perception sounds too sophisticated for my understanding. My relationship with art is at an amateur level of simple like/dislike. I may appreciate the piece because of the plot of the picture, colors, composition and emotions it evokes, but I am not fawning over everything made by the same artist. Still congrats on BOTD!

"Negative Shape - The Defining Attribute" by Christine Archer is a book about the rudiments of drawing, painting and art in general. The way the author explains the art world one can easily tell her love for drawing and painting. The many degrees she earned and her desire to teach art are amazing. Her enthusiasm is contagious and readers should see a different perspective from one that loves art. Whether one has artistic skills or not they can still appreciate the special talent artists possess. Readers should find this book to be a guide for anyone willing to express themselves through art in whatever median they choose. The book clearly shows Christine’s passion for art and it increased my appreciation and made me realize that art includes so much more than drawing and painting. Dance is a wonderful way to show one’s love for art. Musicians are also incredible artists. The official review found that the book started slow but by the end of the book was disappointed the book was not longer. I have always wished for artistic skills but sadly drawing, painting, dancing and playing musical instruments are not skills I possess but I do truly appreciate art in many mediums. I plan to read the entire book so that I can learn much more about art than I ever learned in school and my adult life. I also want to learn and understand the theory of negative shapes and spaces. It will give me a greater appreciation for art and the talented artists.

Thank you for such a detailed and insightful review! I appreciate how you highlighted the book’s ability to broaden perspectives, not just in art but in approaching life itself. The emphasis on negative shapes and spaces as a defining attribute in art sounds fascinating, especially since the author took time to master and explain it. I also like that you pointed out the book's slow start but acknowledged that it becomes more engaging as it progresses. Your honest critique about the initial lack of context and the presence of minor grammatical errors makes your review feel balanced and trustworthy. It’s great to hear that the author’s passion shines through in her writing, making the book enjoyable despite its initial confusion. Based on your review, this seems like a valuable read for anyone looking to deepen their appreciation for art and its many interpretations. Thanks again for sharing your thoughts!
