This sounds like an inspiring story of someone that experienced a life-changing event. She focused on the positive and came out a better person decades later. Thanks for this thorough review and recommendation.

A thoughtful and well-written review from Seetha E, thank you. The narrative of this memoir takes us back to the 1980s and chronicles the author's family as they escape from Afghanistan. It tells the story from the perspective of Leila, a young girl who witnesses the horrors of war, the cruelty and depravity of the Taliban and the struggle for survival. Once Upon a Time in Afghanistan is a powerful and emotional read that will leave you astounded by the beauty and appalled at the horror within its pages.

This memoirs of Nazila Sawhney's Once Upon a Time in Afghanistan sounds interesting. A survivor's first hand acount of what life was and has become in Afghanistan is heart touching. Humans are resilient by Nature but to leave ones motherland and become a refugee in another unknown country is indeed heart wrenching. Thanks for a wonderful review.

I once saw pictures of Afghan beaches, women in bikinis and the caption saying, this is not USA, this is Afghanistan. No, I'm not measuring progress with nudity. However, I'm measuring the open mindedness of people with what is allowed to wear and what is not. It was a surprise. Congratulations on BOTD, and best wishes on future projects.

I commend the author for writing this book. It will mean a lot to those who lived in Afghanistan in a different period and a reminder that it was once a place they called home. I am intrigued to learn about Afghanistan outside of the media. Thank you for the review.

An insider perspective of the conflict in Afghanistan is truly invaluable. I can’t even imagine rising up through turmoil like that. Well done to the author on what seems like an inspiring novel and on achieving #BOTD.

At one point in history, many of my ancestors had to make a similar journey. My family's is formed by chance and circumstance of unlikely people finding their way to safe heaven, falling in love with descendants of different roots. But unfortunately, even if I start reading this book, my mother will take it away, since with my empathy level it is forbidden for me to read such literature. Still, heartfelt congratulations on BOTD!

The subject matter of the novel "Once upon a time in Afghanistan" is the people who are fighting to survive, not just Afghanistan as a nation. The author wants us to empathize with the refugee's plight and be motivated by her inspirational tale of survival. Congrats on BOTD.

This is the most remarkable review I have read lately. The book must be really impressive since it deals with issues so far from common knowledge. The story of an Afgan girl making her name known in the fashion world is inspiring and interesting.

Such a pity how such a loving country had such a turn. I really want to know if the authors grandfather was released and how life was for the family in India. Congrats on BOTD!!

Non fiction books are not my cup of tea but Nazila's story is very heartwarming. She has endured a lot before she was in safety and even after that but still never gave up in pursuit of a better life. Congratulations on becoming BOTD!
