Moving from Sheffield, England to Jamaica is a big move, but the writer--just twelve at the time-- faces it with a keen since of adventure. Since I know next to nothing about the history of Jamaica, I think I shall enjoy this book, especially seeing it from the fresh perspective of this young Baptist minister's daughter. The reviewer says that the book contains more pictures. That makes it sound even more interesting. I saw one of the family on the day they departed England in the sample I read. It was a handsome family, and the writer was a very beautiful young girl.

'Official Review: Island in the Sun - Growing up in Jamaica 1948-1954' by Monica Carly has a sublime introduction. It provides a glimpse into the book's valuable content. This is an autobiography of Monica's experiences in Jamaica as a young girl from 1948-1954. Readers would learn about the country's food, culture, history, and people. The book explores life in a temperate region through the lens of a little English girl. Learning that this is a fun book on experiences in a foreign country was great!

How I wish I were in Jamaica now that the cold is coming! Reading about cultural exchanges is always interesting, especially from a young girl. Thank you for your review.

The sample was engaging and interesting. And I like the author's writing style. I appreciate the effort put into this work. It is a lovely tale and quite informative. But memoir isn't my thing. So I'll pass this one. Thank you for your insightful review.

Thank you for your review. I sampled the book. It is a story I would like to read. I enjoy learning about other cultures and faraway lands. I liked how she explained why she decided to write her memoirs and how they prepared by looking at her old photos and talking to her sister. The book is a wonderful adventure for readers of all ages.

One of the most striking aspects of the memoir is Carly's ability to evoke emotion. Her descriptions of her family's love and support, her friendships with the local children, and her experiences with the island's natural beauty are both heartwarming and poignant. The reader feels a deep connection with the author and her story, empathizing with her joys and challenges.

While the book does touch on some difficult topics, such as poverty and inequality, Carly's approach is generally positive and uplifting. She focuses on the beauty and resilience of the Jamaican people, creating a sense of hope and optimism.

I think this book will relate to readers who have to relocate to a place entirely different from home in all aspects like culture, traditions and beliefs. I commend the author for sharing her life through her pen.

Thank you for your wonderful review. I'm glad you enjoyed the book so much. I also enjoyed her style of writing in the sample. The fact that it was edited so well is also great. I do enjoy most memoirs, especially through the eyes of children. I have added it to my list of books to read.

Awesome book. Funny story is that I live in Jamaica and reading this made me think about how it might've been to live in Jamaica at that time. I would definitely read this book about an English girl navigating Jamaica. I think, to her it was unfair for her father to up and move them to a place they're unfamiliar with but worked with it because she had no other choice. It also explored the relationship she shared with her siblings and how it felt to leave everything behind that they knew.

“Island in the Sun – Growing Up in Jamaica 1948-1954” by Monica Carly is an autobiography of the author’s time living in Jamaica after moving there from England in 1948. Monica was raised by a Baptist Minister and one day her mother announced that they were moving to Jamaica where her father would become the principal at Baptist Theological College and Monica and her siblings Brian and Marilyn would continue their education. Their move to Jamaica a few years after the end of WWII was met with Jamaica still rationing goods and services due to the impact of the war on England. After living in England, the move also exposed them to culture shock. This book is very descriptive of life in Jamaica and even readers that have been there will learn from Monica’s memoir. The sample was excellent, so I have added this book to my to-read shelf.
