This book is a captivating blend of historical medical ethics and modern applications.
There is no frigate like a book
To take us lands away,
Nor any coursers like a page
Of prancing poetry.
This traverse may the poorest take
Without oppress of toll;
How frugal is the chariot
That bears a human soul!

Another value his discussion brings to the existing historical narrative is his discussion of the crossover from western culture to eastern culture.
- That's fascinating! I would love to know more. It was an eye opening review. Thank you.

“written as a pseudo-Hippocratic text”

This is unclear about what this phrase means.

Does it mean written in the /style/ of Hippocrates?

Similarly, the way ”translation” is used implies that this is a book written in some other language than English, then put into English. I don’t think that’s the case, perhaps you meant that some passages from ancient texts were mentioned?

This review of "The Virtuous Physician" by Elliott B. Martin, Jr. highlights the book's significant contribution to medical ethics and history. The author's meticulous translation and insightful commentary on the pseudo-Hippocratic text provide a comprehensive understanding of the evolution of medical ethics from ancient times to the present day. Exploring the crossover between Western and Eastern cultures adds depth to the historical narrative.

The reviewer rightly points out the book's strength in its robust research and scholarly approach, which is a testament to Martin's background as a linguist and philologist. However, the use of technical linguistic terms and the academic writing style may pose a challenge for general readers. The inclusion of essays on the history of the word "physician" and the plague, as well as a reflection on the COVID-19 pandemic, further enriches the book's content.

Despite its complexity, the book's flawless edition and the absence of typographical or grammatical errors contribute to its reliability and coherence. While some parts of the book could benefit from simplification, this does not detract from its value as a scholarly work. Overall, "The Virtuous Physician" is a valuable addition to the literature on medical ethics and history, offering an impressive account of theories and their real-life applications. The 4-star rating seems appropriate, considering the book's vast knowledge and the slight challenge in comprehension due to its academic style.

This sounds interesting to say the least. The medical field is something that has always drawn my attention and think many questions I have might be answered in this book. I'm also curious to find out the author's point of view about COVID. Thanks for a great review. Congrats on BOTD.

At one point in my life, I was forced to spend quite a lot of time in the hospital and wasn't all that impressed by the care they provided. To be honest, I expected much more considering the oaths they took, then again, personal still are just humans with usual flaws. Apologies, I prefer to pass the book, but still congrats on BOTD!

Thank you for your informational review. I'm glad you liked the book. I'm not the audience for this book, but it sounds as if it would be interesting for those who like science and medicine. The's awesome that the editing was so well done. I hope that many others will enjoy the book that are interesting in this genre.

I can already tell from the details in the OBC official review that this is not my type of reading material. Since I'm not well-versed in the medical field, I'm going to pass on this one. However, congrats to the author for having the BOTD.

I like the fact that thus book traces medical ethics right from the Greek medical ethics, thereby providing readers with an opportunity to compare contemporary practice with ancient practice. Thanks for the review.
