I completely agree, "Shaking Up the World" is such an engaging and inspiring read. Like you, I loved learning about the diverse lives and incredible accomplishments of the 1957 Naval Academy class. The book really does showcase their sense of unity and lightheartedness, even when recounting tough experiences. I also thought that all the stories were unique and interesting, and the way the author organized the book was perfect.

You've perfectly described the unique charm of this book. The way Paulk has weaved together the stories of his classmates really does give you a sense of their individual journeys as well as their collective impact on the world. I found the historical context fascinating, and I was moved by their sense of camaraderie, and their dedication. I also agree on your point about how light the stories can be despite them relating to hard situations.

Thank you for your great review. I'm glad you enjoyed it and the editing was done well. I don't usually care for stories on war, but do enjoy many memoirs especially when written by people near my parents' ages. We can often learn from our past.

In 1953, a lot of young men applied to the Naval Academy. George Bouvet was the best student at the Naval Academy. He would work above and upon heights like he was climbing Mount Everest.
In 1957, 848 students graduated and 847 students received a BS degree in general engineering and others received commissions into Navy, Air Force, or Marine Corps.
During the four years of schooling, 312 students dropped out because of voluntary, academic or medical issues. About 67 percent of the class went to Navy.
The minimum obligation of the Naval Academy was to serve three years in the Air Force and four years
in the Navy or Marine Corps.
When they graduated, Eisenhower was president. Then, the Cold War is started not long at. Russia launched its Sputnik a year later and the missle era was just beginning.

These stories make you see that, beyond the achievements, they were real people with challenges, triumphs and failures. It's as if he was telling you Look what ordinary people can achieve when they dedicate themselves and support each other

This is a historical memoir that is focused on the experiences of the author and his colleagues while training in the Naval Academy back in the year 1957. Readers with a fascination for the navy or the 1950s timeline will enjoy this novel.

"Shaking Up the World" by James D Paulk Jr. is a compelling anthology that follows the extraordinary travels of United States Naval Academy graduates, notably those from the Class of 1957. The book shows the different routes these individuals have followed via over 80 narratives, ranging from military service to significant achievements in technology and space exploration. Notable stories include Brad Parkinson, the "architect of GPS," and astronaut Charlie Duke, who stepped on the moon as part of the Apollo 16 mission. The anthology blends stories of heroism and resilience with moments of humor, providing readers with an entertaining look at how the Naval Academy has shaped leaders in a variety of areas.

“Shaking Up the World: Stories of the Naval Academy Class of 1957” by James D. Paulk is a collection of stories organized by the author. Each chapter covers a different class member involved in the action. The book is based on what these class members remember of their lives and adventures. Most of the members had become very accomplished and important members of society which is probably the case for all graduates of our military academies. Many of the graduates had military experience in wars, which in the case of the 1957 class would have been Vietnam. This is a very interesting book and readers should enjoy every chapter filled with history and suspense. I love history books and suspense adds to the story. This naval class truly shook up the world.
