In Lofton 6: A Travesty of Justice, Darryl G. Lofton documents his family history with corresponding civil rights disputes and rulings that have impacted his life. From a childhood in and out of foster homes to his time in college, the Navy, and as a civil service employee, Lofton chronicles his journey, providing a detailed timeline and poignant reflections on the discrimination and injustice he experienced.

Although the 1954 Brown v. Board of Education would become a catalyst for the civil rights movement, Lofton explains the socioeconomic loss that African-American communities initially suffered as a result of the ruling and desegregation. He describes the painful memories of his parents' unjust arrest in 1964; he and his five siblings were placed as wards of the court and subsequently abused. Lofton relates his struggle to overcome a poor education and his eventual pursuit of a master's degree. He shares insights regarding his family history and its connection to the challenges he has faced with relationships, family, education, and his career to help others who are searching for answers.

In the 176-page book, Lofton conveys the need to better understand the civil rights timeline, its connection to his family history, and how it has impacted his life. The research he provides effectively communicates all of the above. Lofton includes a detailed biography of his family and identifies the progression of the historical civil rights rulings as they pertain to his family's legacy.

I most liked Lofton's motivation in writing the book; rather than perpetuating a victim mentality, he researched to better understand his family history. Time and time again, Lofton demonstrates perseverance and a willingness to get back up after being knocked down. His pursuit of education amidst the challenges he faced exemplifies his strength and determination. "I needed to learn how to articulate my thoughts better because these people all around me had the education I lacked."

Although it was a relevant portion of the story, I disliked reading the descriptions depicting child abuse. It's difficult to comprehend the horrific abuse rampant within the juvenile system, but Lofton sensitively portrays his experiences.

Unfortunately, the book contains pages of duplicate content. For example, there are four pages in Chapter 19 that are repeated from Chapter 18. This pattern of verbatim repetition occurs more than once and confirms that the book wasn't professionally edited. Also, I noted grammatical errors.

Due to the grammatical errors and repetitious content, I rate the book 2 out of 4 stars. However, despite these issues, Lofton’s story provides insight that may help others. I recommend the book to readers who want to learn more about the history of the civil rights movement, particularly from an African-American perspective. It will also appeal to those who are interested in the juvenile justice system. I would not recommend the book to readers who are triggered by depictions of child abuse.

It takes not only skill but also great courage to be able to transform something tragic into a positive message that'll open other's minds more. Thank you for your honest and concise review.

This sounds like a good way to learn about the civil rights movement and how it affected African-Americans at the time. It is too bad that the book wasn't edited well. Hopefully, the author will fix those flaws. He had a horrific childhood and managed to overcome. You have to admire him for that. Great review!

Thanks for the review. This sounds like a worthwhile read. If you enjoyed this book, i would recommend the documentary "Thirteen". I think it's free with Amazon Prime and might be on Netflix too.

It's inspiring to read about someone who gets up and does well after being knocked down, despite suffering miscarriages of justice. This sounds like a motivating story!

This sounds like a story that needs to be told, but it needs some editing before it's ready for a greater readership. I can't imagine what the author had to go through. Thanks for the review.
