Living Wisely: For Millennials & Beyond by Barry M. Cohen Ph.D. contains profound wisdom not only for millennials but also for other generations.
It is divided into four main sections that explore living wisely through using good judgment, important skills to develop early in life and throughout adulthood as well as skills that can bring out one’s full potential. Cohen includes inspiring anecdotes from his own underprivileged childhood where he developed skills that would serve him in his adulthood as well as his career and family life and the skills, knowledge, and insight he acquired along the way. The themes of the book are dynamic and they range from finance, career, relationships, family and also the cultivation of useful skills and habits.
I liked that the author’s experience as an industrial psychologist shows as he shares his various interactions with people he has encountered, the conversations he has had with them and his deductions of their situations. Using these relatable examples, it is easy to grasp the message of the book and apply it in real life. In one account, he explains how active and open listening allows for open and considerate dialogue which helps in problem-solving. In some instances, case studies are offered that help explain the details in the book.
I also appreciated that important information is noted and separated in point form. Key phrases are written in bold print which helps bring attention to them. This form of writing helped me later remember key points. At the end of each chapter, resources that support the content of the book are listed. They are also helpful in case of further reading and research. The sources are obtained from the internet which is the most accessible source of information for millennials. It is also easy to access further information by clicking the links provided.
In some places, illustrations are included which help in expounding on the content of the chapters in which the images appear. The content of the book is organized in an orderly fashion which makes reading seamless. Each section explores specific topics helpful to millennials and other readers who wish to glean some insight from the author’s messages as the content shows what works and what should be avoided for someone to live a fulfilling life.
However, in some places, the author offers his personal viewpoint on issues which could be viewed or interpreted differently.
Living Wisely: For Millennials & Beyond by Barry M. Cohen Ph.D. provides essential advice which readers who belong to the millennial generation will find useful. Some of the content in the book may not be applicable to readers who belong to older generations. It is professionally edited and I did not identify any grammatical errors. I rate it 4 out of 4 stars.
