The Cult Next Door is a gripping read about a young woman who is lured into an intellectually inspired “New Age” cult by a single, charismatic man (George) who claims to possess “The Energy” to influence the world and create limitless power and prosperity. Young Elizabeth becomes one of the groups’ foremost leaders, who follows George into a psychological quagmire that ends in mental cruelty, physical brutality, and a grip upon its members that lead them to pay him for every hour they spend absorbing his “Energy.” In the end, bank accounts are drained and lives ruined under the seemingly invincible control George has among his followers. The author uses strong and clever metaphor in a succinct and tightly written first person narrative. Her story is serious, and her life suffered untold devastation, however there is subtle and wickedly delicious humor factored in, and you will find yourself both appalled and in the grips of hilarity at the ludicrous ironies that this cult leader would have the world believe. A powerful, true story, I highly recommend this book to all those intelligent people who have ever followed the “Pied Piper” into a false land promising spiritual immortality and everlasting health, power, and happiness. For those that have never been under the hypnotic and cunning grip of a masterful leader, read this book and heed its warnings! The Cult Next Door, for its masterfully written, gripping narrative, rates a 4 out of 4 stars.
