Being black and being a woman is not easy in a society that holds those two characteristics against you as if they were a crime. DeFacto Feminism: Essays Straight Outta Oakland shows this and fights against it with well-written essays.

The narrative is engaging, real and mesmerizing. There are many anecdotes and life lessons from the author's life mixed with the essays. One of the biggest mentions in the book is The Black Panthers. the author was involved with the organization in their first years. She turned those experiences in lessons and anecdotes that reflect how important the movement was during its time. She also brings those anecdotes to present time and reflects how important the organization still is for people of color.

This book is not for the faint-hearted. The strong topics and sometimes accusations the author makes against the system we live in are extraordinary. In one particular essay, the author speaks about her father and religion. She explained how hard it was for her father to accept religion back in his hearth and how much that impacted her life. That essay is one of my favorites because it shows how human the people in her life are and how hard is to forgive oneself and accept God when you need it the most.

But the book is not only filled with essays, but it also counts with poems. There are poems about gun control and catcalling which adds to the necessity of a structural change in our system. By the end of the book, you would feel a connection to the author. Judy Juanita gives her soul on every page and you get to know her and relate to her.

One thing I did not enjoy however was the repetition of text between essays, this felt unnecessary for the narrative but besides that, I have no complaints.

Originally I only read the sample pages of the book and was not expecting to feel so mesmerized by the essays as I did. So I decided to continue on and read the whole book. It was a great decision. I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. I wasn't expecting to love it as much as I did and I wasn't expecting to feel identify with Judy Juanita as I did. Everyone could get a feeling of serenity reading this book. So I recommend it for all audiences, especially if feminist subjects are interesting for you.

Also, I would like to point out that DeFacto Feminism: Essays Straight Outta Oakland by Judy Juanita was well-written and professionally edited, I couldn't find errors and the drawings added essence to the book.
