The Attitude Journals by David Mauro is a memoir about the struggles and questions of his personal life, and the answers he finds through mountain climbing. Mauro wanted to be good in sports since he was a young child but just did not possess the given talent in any of the sports he tried. He endured a failed marriage and lost all confidence in himself. He, by chance, had the opportunity to consider mountain climbing and was sure he would fail but felt like trying. The book surprised me. I am not a fan of mountain climbing but was completely enthralled with the interesting stories inside this book.
My favorite part of the book is when Mauro realizes after the first of seven climbs, Mount Denali, the life lesson the climb taught him. I won’t go into the lesson because it would be a spoiler. You will have to read it for yourself. Although all seven climbs teach him different lessons pertinent to his life and are equally important, the first is still my favorite. This is my favorite quote from the first climb, “Where mountains are so often a metaphor for life, my life became a metaphor of this mountain.”
Secondly. I love that Mauro finds the perfect woman to love and support him in his endeavors. This part of the book shows us how important it is to have good healthy relationships. His two sons became a good source of support as well. The way she dresses up in a theme to match the mountain he climbed when he returned is a funny and loving way to celebrate his accomplishment.
The Attitude Journals is well written and flows fluidly. The author has a fantastic way to describe his climbs and pull you in with him. You can easily imagine being there at the same time he is.
I did not like the fact that the amount of money it takes to take these trips is extremely expensive. I believe it keeps many from being able to attain the pleasure of these mesmerizing trips. I understand it is a great physical feat to accomplish this, but do not like that a main deciding factor is money and not ability.
I would recommend The Attitude Journals to anybody interested in mountain climbing or other extreme sports. It would be interesting to people who want to read a great book about searching and finding answers to life, in unlikely places. It is also a good read for those who need encouragement through dark times. The book is professionally edited, I only found one error. This book is well deserving of the 4 out of 4 stars, I give it.
