Flipping properties, buying rental properties, and investing in real estate investment groups are all ways to invest in real estate. Barry Wilmeth in his book, Making Others Rich First: Creating Success for Others Can Be Your Greatest Success, describes many details of real estate investing and stresses the importance of mentoring and being mentored. Wilmeth believes that the first step in building wealth is to own your own house.
Some of the topics involving real estate investing covered in the book include: growing a business, marketing, advertising, prospecting, networking, making referrals, building an online reputation, staying motivated, and unleashing your potential. The main theme throughout the book is to mentor others, which will benefit both the mentor and the mentee, as the title of the book states. The author’s attitude of making others rich first is not only explained but also is being lived out in his own life.
I like that even though I may not be involved in real estate investing, I am able to use many of the concepts of achieving dreams, building relationships, being a learner, and staying motivated in other areas of life. I especially like that each chapter begins with a famous quote. Each thought-provoking quote fits well with the chapter’s content. One of my favorite quotes is from Norman Vincent Peale: “Change your thoughts and you change your world.”
I least enjoyed the parts that were about becoming a legal business, making a plan/strategy, and understanding legal contracts. Though these are very necessary parts of real estate investing, these seem to be the most difficult areas to actually pursue this career. Real estate investing takes not only money but also takes a lot of time, knowledge, and learning to acquire the expertise needed for success. People truly motivated to succeed in real estate investing will need to work through all these challenges. But again, these are just some of the reasons the author suggests that new investors have need of a mentor.
I rate Making Others Rich First by Barry Wilmeth 4 out of 4 stars. The author’s easy-to-follow organization, motivational quotes, and multitudes of advice from Wilmeth’s own experiences, all deserve this rating. The book was well written with only a few errors.
People who have an interest, have just started, or have experience in real estate investing will find this book the most helpful. The information, advice, and steps given to be a successful mentor or mentee in the world of real estate investing, all serve as a great foundation in this book. This book would also benefit people interested in telemarketing and business, as the information can be used in these areas.
