I found Big Things Have Small Beginnings by Wes Berry very inspiring as a small business owner myself. When I first started this book, I had found myself struggling forming ideas on how to advance in my business and felt like I had hit a brick wall. I was pleased to see that someone else had faced similar struggles and was able to overcome them. This gave me hope that I can possibly do the same.
My favorite part of the book was reading chapter six in which Mr. Berry shared his parents' story as well as his own. The fact that he could take a small concept such as a flower shop and expand it to what it is today was absolutely amazing. The analogies he used were helpful and paralleled with obstacles that are often faced in business. What I liked most about this book was that he was able to overcome these obstacles by being diligent, focused, motivated, and working hard. It is sometimes frustrating trying to run a business when we don’t know what to do next or where to go. Mr. Berry showed how important networking is and also showed that sometimes, money doesn’t need to be exchanged in order to accomplish what you need to do.
Another chapter I thoroughly enjoyed was Chapter 4: Mapping the Journey. I enjoyed how he took the reader back in time a little to discuss his family vacations with his wife and children. It served as a reminder that we are always going somewhere. Whether it's taking a road trip, working on our physical health, or running a business, we are constantly moving in a forward direction to meet a goal or reach a destination.
While reading Big Things Have Small Beginnings, I did not notice any grammatical errors and found that the content flowed very well. It was very well organized and very well edited. Overall I would give this book four out of four stars because it is one I will go back to and re-read for inspiration and possible ideas. There was nothing about the book I did not like. Every point made hit home and I found value in each chapter/part.
I would recommend this book to any small business owners who are either starting out, having problems advancing, or even business owners who are well established. This book has multiple uses in terms of inspiration, motivation, and forming new concepts so I would highly recommend it to business owners. If you are not interested in business at all, then I would not recommend this book.
