"Defining Moments OF A Free Man In A Black Stream" by Dr. Frank L. Douglas is a reflection of a brilliant man's journey from poverty from British Guiana. This book is written for those who may be struggling with discrimination because of the color of their skin. From the beginning to end of this book I would give it a rating of 4 out of 4 stars. A summary or lesson from this book would be to have a value driven life and to focus much more on the process and not the outcome.

Growing up in British Guiana, Frank was led and inspired by religion. His family were devote Evangelist. He struggled with his religiosity while studying abroad in America so much so that he decided to not focus on his religion anymore and follow the example of his Uncle Willie. Uncle Willie who wasn't really his uncle was still a great man who led by example. His motto was to treat people right and with respect, and to always be found doing the right thing. This was the way Uncle Willie lived his life day by day. Frank chose to follow this example believing it would serve him well in his studies and in his live. Frank still lives this way today.

Frank won a Fulbright scholarship, and came to America for college. This was a time of turmoil in the 1960's. He studied at Lehigh University were he was introduced to his first example of racism. Then he completed his graduate school at Cornell University. During this time, Frank had an ulcer scare which placed him in the hospital. After which he came to the conclusion that his symptoms and diagnosis were being caused by his environment and situation.

Frank with all the skills and knowledge he now possessed, entered the Pharmaceutical Drug Industry. He became a leading, award winning chemist for his work in the fields of Cancer, Seizure, Diabetes and many, many more.

In summary, this book is a compelling story of race, struggle, pain, and success in a harsh time in America's history. The one thing that I most liked about this book Defining Moments of a Free Man from a Black Stream is the way Frank shows us how to battle the injustices of racial discrimination in school, work and everyday society. Honestly there wasn't anything about this book that I didn't like. If you are looking for a great book for inspiration during a turbulent time in your life then I suggest giving this book a try.

It's crazy how racial discrimination is still a major social problem. And I think it's going to be like this for quite some time. I admire the author for his ferocious determination to make something if himself despite is upbringing. I love to see black people win.
