Finding a Job In Tough Times by Dr. Tim Johnson is more than just the typical how-to book. It is both a textbook and a workbook all in one for finding a job. I would recommend it as a gift for high school seniors or even juniors. This is because it has information that has readers look at what they like doing and what they can already do to find a job that matches their interest.

This book takes readers through six short steps of self-reflection to create a great resume and impresses employers. The first three steps are re-defining yourself, re-defining your goals, and re-examining your limitations. In these first three steps, readers look at themselves and their past experiences. Readers are encouraged to zero in on what skills, traits, and abilities they already !!br0ken!! There are twenty-eight exercises that help readers do this. It also helps readers to look for jobs based on what they can already do.

The next three steps are creating opportunities, never saying no, and focusing. There are another twenty exercises for these steps for readers to fill out. These steps focus on what readers should do to find the job they want. It goes over important things like talking to people already working in the field and finding out what kind of experience is needed. Once the book is finished readers should at least have a working plan of how to get into their career field of choice.

What I liked best is that at the end of every chapter there are exercises for the reader to complete. These exercises reinforce the information presented in the chapter. They also help to focus the reader on themselves and what they must accomplish to get the job they want. What I did not like about this book is its title. This book is not about getting just any job in today’s workforce but a career. There is a distinct difference between the two and I feel that should have been reflected better in the title. I also would have included a bit more space for completing the exercises.

The target readers are anyone looking at getting a lifelong job or career who needs help figuring out how to go about doing it. It offers assistance for people in all stages of the job search process. It is great for those thinking about college for the first time and recent graduates. People who have been unemployed for a while will also find this book to be helpful to them. It is because of how helpful this book is that I rate it 4 out of 4. I found no errors in this book at all, meaning it has been exceptionally well-edited. The chapters are kept short and simple so readers can focus on the meaning of the information and the exercises. If readers take the time to do the exercises the book would be very helpful to them.
