Finding A Job in Tough Times by Dr. Tim Johnson is a walk-through guideline to help those seeking jobs obtain the jobs they desire. It lays out an outline with tips and exercises to help the reader get hired sooner, rather than later. It’s essentially a workbook to help readers lay out a plan that will help them get the job they want.
This book has 48 exercises with various simple and easy to answer questions. My favorite exercise was the serendipity experiment in which you pick one full day and say yes to everything that comes your way. This experiment opens up a lot of opportunities and allows you to learn new things about yourself. These exercises are arranged in an exact order that progresses as the reader finishes each one. The reader should not be able to complete all of the exercises in one day. Johnson does explain that this plan will take a while to truly take effect and make a change in the readers views and life. The purpose of the exercises and questions are to get the reader to really look at themselves and to find out who they are as a person. Johnson states that “To get a job, you must know who you are.”
Before each chapter a brief blurb is inserted. Most of these are little insights into Johnson’s real-life experiences and what he did when he was out of a job. Each blurb correlates to the information following it. These personal experiences and opinions allow the reader to know that they are not alone and are understood.
This book fascinated me and really drew me in. I am not a new graduate or unemployed, but this book still spoke to me. It is not just for those without a job. This book inspires even employed people to reevaluate their resumes and think out how to enhance their individuality in the anticipation that they may want to change careers one day. There is also a section to help with resume building. Johnson lays out the important aspects to put into a resume and how to present it so that the applicant stands out to their potential future employer. He also explains what employers look for in resumes and provides website links to help the reader maximize their resume.
There is one chapter in the book that goes over spirituality and that chapter is even titled “And the Bible says…”. It emphasizes a story about Jesus, Mary, Martha, and priorities. I highly enjoyed this section but know that not everyone enjoys the same religious aspects as I do. Johnson also has a section in which he spotlights volunteering in the church. I think it would be ideal, for this time and age, to change this section to volunteering in the community as a whole.
I rate Finding A Job in Tough Times 4 out of 4 stars. I was captivated while reading it. It’s written in a straightforward yet alluring approach. It was also very well edited. I only noticed one error. This book is a great tool for new graduates, experienced workers who have found themselves without a job, and even for those who have jobs but are looking to escalate their career or even start a new one.
