Idiom Attack written by Peter N. Liptak, Matthew Douma and Jay Douma was the first book I was allowed to review on here. I am glad I did not have the luxury of choosing, because chances are I may have not have chosen it as my starting point. This book pointed out in a very simplistic form, the power of vocabulary and how we can connect words in a certain context to express oneself and use the exact same words in a different form to mean something completely different. It is equally educational to kids as much as for adults.

English is one of five languages I speak, but one that I learned since I was three years old. I have always believed that the door to learning a culture is through learning its spoken language first. Getting a good grasp of the language helps one better understand a culture and connect with its people.

I rate this book 4 out of 4 for a few reasons. In addition to it being exceptionally well edited, I really enjoyed reading things I already knew, but from a different perspective. It opened my eyes about certain expressions in a humorous way. I felt this was something I would love to have my 10 year old daughter read and recommend to her friends. My daughter has been participating in the battle of the books and I know this would have been one book she would have really enjoyed.

This book can easily appeal to all ages due to the fact that it has cross words, fill in the blanks and other questions. It is easy to read, understand and relate. This book will equally appeal to individuals who are trying to improve their lingual skills and widen their vocabulary. It is also surely appealing to those who not only wish to improve their abilities to communicate/ converse, but their ability to better understand others. This is a book I would recommend to schools targeting ages 9 and older. Although, it may be worth mentioning, that there can be certain words which may possibly be perceived as inappropriate. Then again those words are in no way vulgar or profane. Those are all common expressions one may at some point be inadvertently exposed to in one way or another. As an example, the idiom "shoot someone down", or "bookworm", or "crack of dawn", "sleepy head"...etc. This all again depends on the reader's background, age,...etc - but as long as we keep an open mind, this should not be an issue. I just thought of bringing it to the attention of those who might be concerned.

In summary, the reasoning behind my exceptionally good rating was because one can rarely find a book that is so amusing, humorous, simple to understand, easy to relate to and at the same time appealing to a wide range of readers. Regardless of whether English is the reader's first language or not, this book can and will not only improve the understanding of the language, but it will surely help widen the reader's horizon and perception of certain idioms and their true meaning.
