Finding A Job in Tough Times by Dr. Tim Johnson aims to help the unemployed and fresh graduates look for a job. The book provides step-by-step instructions and a myriad of exercises. Through this book, each reader can achieve an understanding of multiple aspects of himself and get ready to apply for a job.
The structure of the book is straightforward. Each chapter usually starts with the author's stories and observations surrounding his successes and failures. Subsequently, the author provides recommendations on what the readers need to do. His advice can involve completing mundane tasks such as formulating plans, each of which may consist of smaller ones. The author believes that doing so equips those who are seriously using the book to seek employment with attainable goals. By getting smaller goals done first, the job seekers will reap higher dividends later on.
I believed that Finding A Job in Tough Times astutely addressed a few major issues for job seekers. Even though I had been through the grind of career searching and interviews, I wished that I had read this book when I started. One thing I should have known was to distinguish between a job and a career. While a job could show who I was and what I was doing, a career represented who I could be. Strangely, I couldn't obtain a career without having experienced at least one job. According to the book, the purpose of a job was to force me to look forward. Once I was able to elevate the mundane aspects of my job, I could become ready to explore my career options. I had considered leaving my job. But after reading this book, I became convinced that I needed to do my best in my job to do better in the future.
Despite not being currently active in the job market, I found this book extremely valuable. Some of the exercises caused me to self-evaluate, which I had not done since the acceptance of my current job quite some time ago. I had not actively noticed the changes in my traits and abilities until I did the exercises and jotted my strengths and weaknesses down. Those exercises not only allowed me to benchmark what I had been learning but also prepared me for what could happen to my current position. Considering the rapid shift towards artificial intelligence and the impacts on the job market, I believed this book would gain more recognition over time.
Due to the reasons above, I give Finding A Job in Tough Times 4 out of 4 stars. I didn't notice any grammatical errors. This book is well-edited. I'd recommend this book to people who are actively looking for their first job or are transitioning to another job or career. I would also send this book to my sibling, who just started college and is perhaps still unaware of how difficult it is to find a good job.
