In just about sixty-eight pages, Dr. Tim Johnson does a great job at providing nuggets of wisdom that could help jobless readers secure a job. The book takes the structure of a personal workbook and has one main cross-cutting theme; personal grooming for the job market.
There is a lot to learn from this book. I will highlight a few. First and foremost, the author helps the reader to understand the secret of securing any job. That is by demonstrating to a potential employer that one meets the requirements of a job more satisfactorily than his/her competitors. This led to the segment where the author spoke about self-awareness, preparation of resumes and what not to say at an interview. The other interesting thought was the thought about where to find jobs and this had to do with expanding one’s network.
What I like most about this book is that it’s written in such a way that the ideas therein are simple and easy to implement; this enhances the impactfulness of the book. I also liked the fact that the author gave his testimony which demonstrated that all of us, no matter how established, were once unemployed.
The downside for me was that the exercises at the end of each chapter were rather too much and exhausting. My suggestion would, therefore, be that these exercises be condensed to just a few that are of utmost importance. As though this was not enough, the author invites the reader to participate in a series of more lectures offered on a website. The other issue relates to the fragmentation of ideas. Some ideas are started, left midway, and then revisited as 'part two,' 'part three' and so forth. Also, I was able to spot minor grammatical errors. The said errors nonetheless, did not distract my enjoyment of the book.
Overall, Finding A Job in Tough Times by Dr. Tim Johnson was a very informative and inspiring self-help book. I’m delighted to rate it at 4 out of 4 stars. The foregoing shortcomings do not hinder me from awarding a perfect score since I feel the main objective of the book was achieved anyway.
Whereas this book is befitting to a wide range of readers, I specifically recommend it to all persons in search of a job. It will also appeal to readers seeking to go on a journey of self-discovery and have a time of reflection, career-wise. This book does not contain any profanities.
