With the increasing number of graduates and the high technological advances requiring low manpower, there is a need for graduates to develop some extra skills to compete fairly in the job market. Dr. Tim Johnson’s Finding A Job in Tough Times provides a step-by-step guide for graduates in making sure they develop some extra skills hoping to secure a job in the ever-competitive job market.
To begin with, the title “Who are you” enables the readers to reflect on themselves while comparing themselves with their favorite people and role models. This enables them to determine the qualities they lack and give room for developing them. The second subtitle, What does the future look like, enables the reader to see into the future and explore the possibilities. It also restores their hopes and helps them to set long-term goals. It doesn’t end there, the “six steps to paycheck” is what I would call the “mother topic” Wich takes more than half the book.
Dr. Tim Johnson, after struggling with the job-seeking, is experienced enough, especially considering that he had very few professional credentials. The book is well structured and, at the beginning of the book, he clarifies that it’s not a novel, rather, it’s a lecture, a workbook with assignments, lecture notes and so much more. Speaking of a workbook, I must mention that after every topic, there are activities to be carried out by the reader and questions to test their already attained knowledge. So, basically, the book has a textbook structure as opposed to a novel.
Since the book is a combination of motivation and knowledge, it will impress so many people, just like it did to me. That it handled current affairs more practically and applicably makes it unique and lovable. I also loved the editing, especially how the editors made sure it was a mistake-free novel as far as grammar, punctuation, and spellings are concerned.
The only thing that didn’t impress me is the lecture approach. Although the book is good, not everyone would take a pen and a book (as the author recommends) and begin taking notes, doing assignments just like in classwork. The author wasn’t interactive either. The book looked like a teacher-student relationship; hence, one can easily get bored reading it.
To conclude, I rate Finding A Job in Tough Times by Dr. Tim Johnson 4 out of 4 stars. This is because, although I didn’t find the lecturing approach pleasing, it is just a personal taste and I’m sure some readers will find it appealing. I recommend this book to anyone who is seeking employment or is in school and therefore will be job seeking soon. I don’t think there is any specific group of people who shouldn’t read the book, but if you’re looking for something entertaining, something to keep you glued to the screen, then this might not be a nice pick for you.
