Welcome to the most interesting world of Eggstravagant Easter Eggs created by Maya Elston. The book provides a step by step guidance on how to decorate eggs and contains over 200 ideas for artistic looking eggs.

Maya Elston graduated from the Department of Monumental Paintings at the National Academy of Art in Sofia, Bulgaria. She applies her knowledge and artistic skills to the art of egg decorations and shares her experience with her reader. The book is packed with very useful and detailed information along with inspiring illustrations and photographs.

At the beginning of the book, after the short introduction which sets the scene and provides some information about the tradition to decorate eggs for Easter, the reader will be able to go through the detailed list of tools required for the process and a variety of types of eggs that can be used. Even if you have never attempted to decorate an egg before, you will not feel lost, as the instructions are clear and are written in a very friendly and informative way with lots of reassurances throughout. You will find out about wide range of materials to decorate the eggs with, there is lace, collage, paint, acrylics, various types of fabric, tape, food colouring and many others. You will learn some useful tips on how to empty fresh eggs, how to correct mistakes you might make while painting, how to treat the materials in a very unexpected and inventive way, for example brushing lace with diluted instant coffee to age it.

I was impressed by the illustrations in the book, there are some fabulous designs in a variety of styles. You will see eggs decorated as ancient rugs, Italian and Spanish tiles, ethnic embroidery. If you are looking for some ideas for craft sessions with kids, there are examples of figurines of chickens, birds and fish made with ribbons, silk and notions. The chapter I enjoyed the most is “Eggs in the style of Faberge Imperial Eggs”. It touches upon the legendary and famous creations and may inspire you to recreate some elaborate designs by using gold and silver paint.

The book is very well edited, it has been a pleasure to read it. I rate it 4 out of 4. Even if you are not actually thinking about taking up egg decorating, you may find it interesting from the esthetical point of view. But if you are into arts and crafts, if you want to learn a new skill as a hobby or if you are looking for inspiration, this is definitely the book for you.
