Finding A Job in Tough Times by Dr. Tim Johnson is a book that will not only set you on a path to finding your next job but also on a path of self-discovery and what you’re doing with your life. The book is in the form of a workbook with exercises that put you on this path. I bought a journal just to fill up with the exercises in this book and now I can safely say that I have also developed the beautiful art of journaling.

Readers of this book must understand that going through it is a journey one must take their own time to experience. Some exercises take days of contemplation and getting your affairs in order to complete and it is advisable to do them thoroughly without rushing for best results. An important feature of the book and what I like most about it is that Dr. Johnson dives right into it without beating about the bush or preaching. You are the protagonist and you get all the attention you deserve. The book is suitable for all kinds of audience, recent college graduates hunting for their first jobs, employees looking for a promotion, or even those who have been unemployed for any reason and are itching to get back in the game.

The exercises start out simple. You outline your personality, skills and abilities, goals and experiences and learn how these need to be reflected in a job interview. The latter part of the book pushes you to dig deeper into your life and encourages you to be open to new opportunities and ideas. Some exercises helped in opening yourself up to the interview process. In the end, all the exercises are revisited and updated to match what was learnt along the way.

Overall I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. There is nothing that I didn’t like about it. It is crisp, to the point, interesting and involving. The author has sprinkled just the right amount of motivational dialogue and anecdotes in it to not become a boring chore.

As a person who recently graduated, applied to several jobs, gave a number of interviews and received two offers, I can see how I could’ve struggled less had I read this book before I started applying for jobs and how I unknowingly reflected some of the qualities listed in this book in the two of the interviews that I did receive a final offer from. I’m definitely going to keep my career journal updated for the next time I will be job hunting.
