In Following Jesus In the Age of Trump, Dr. Mary Theresa Webb invites Christians to consider American politics in light of the Beatitudes, a set of declarations delivered by Jesus. Webb establishes context with an historical overview supported by archaeological evidence and geographical description. She then discusses each of the beatitudes based on literal translations of Hebrew and Greek. With each of the Beatitudes explained, Webb suggests a “Beatitudes compass” to navigate the current political situation. This “Beatitudes compass” processes political rhetoric and human actions through the teachings of Jesus.

Dr. Webb explores the impact the Age of Christ has had, and asks readers to consider how it should guide politics. She describes the political climate in which Jesus lived, the numerous political factions and their interactions with Roman authority. She traces the historical transformation of Christianity from a subversive underground group to the official state religion under Emperor Constantine.

Following Jesus In the Age of Trump equally addresses Christians in the United States who support President Trump, and Christians who oppose Trump. The book treats both groups with respect, and asks both to communicate respectfully using the “Beatitudes compass” as a guide. Webb simulates a discussion between the two groups, based on arguments the groups’ typical talking points. She acknowledges the fallacies of each viewpoint. She then offers possible ways American Christians could approach political topics. Finally, Webb invites each side to honest self-examination.

The feature of Following Jesus In the Age of Trump I liked most was the simple yet profound idea that Christians must use the Beatitudes as the starting point for discussion and action. I also appreciated the historical information Webb provided for readers who are not well versed in Christian history. The element I disliked most was the discussion of theological points of eschatology (the study of the end of time according to Christian belief). I understand why Webb included this chapter, but I think some readers might find the discussion of inaugurated versus completed eschatology confusing.

Following Jesus In the Age of Trump will appeal to a wide range of Christians who are concerned about the political climate in the United States and the toll it has taken on local parishes and congregations. The author is familiar with many different denominations of Christianity, and she has written the book using terms that are commonly understood and comfortable for a wide range of churches. This would be a good book for individual or group study. Most readers will appreciate the author’s good will toward various political views, however, readers who are deeply committed to demonizing those who disagree with them could become angry at the book.

I rate Following Jesus In the Age of Trump 4 out of 4 stars because this is a unique, timely book. American political conflict is a sensitive topic to approach, and I have not seen any other authors attempt it as thoughtfully as Dr. Webb has. I did not give it three stars because I think it will be a relevant work long after the current political situation becomes history. Following Jesus In the Age of Trump will give readers of future generations an understanding of the social conflicts of our time. The book appears to have been professionally edited, and the sources are well documented.
