As a student graduating at the end of this year, I was thrilled to pick up this gem titled Finding A Job in Tough Times by Dr Tim Johnson. I could not have asked for a better book to review as I will soon be right in the middle of the trials and tribulations of finding my first job. Having read the short blurb describing what I could expect, I dived straight in with excitement with what I could accomplish reading this book.

This short non-fiction workbook engages and encourages the reader to become more involved in their job-seeking world. The author delves into the mind of the reader, actively seeking the strengths and weaknesses of every individual and how areas of difficulty may be improved. He gradually starts to make you more aware of how you can develop yourself, not only from a job seekers perspective but from a personal one.

This thought-provoking, honest guide to finding a job hits home the harsh realities that many people don’t realize they will have to face, such as how to deal with negative feelings like rejection and frustration towards the process. In my opinion, it is quite comforting to know that what I will go through is not meant to hurt personally, but that it is just a part of the process and therefore you should dust yourself off and never give up.

I give this workbook a rating of 4 out of 4 stars. It was exceptionally well-written and edited and I could not find any mistakes throughout my read. The exercises in the book were a perfect guide to keep me on track with finding my strengths, weaknesses and what I could offer a potential employer in the future.

I recommend this book to anyone who will be looking for a job in the future or who are currently seeking one now, as it offers numerous tips and tricks to improve or create a CV from scratch. The only shortfall I picked up on in this book was that some of the methods of finding a job were a bit outdated, which is understandable, as it was published some time ago. A great addition to this book would be to include more tech-savvy ways of finding a job online, as most platforms have migrated to this space. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and hope to receive similar books to review in the future.
