If you’re looking for a book that will help you establish, maintain and develop your health-related business, Wellness Incorporated by Jennifer Buchanan is an excellent resource. Ms. Buchanan is a Canadian business owner of over 20 years. She is also a music therapist, presenter, coach, author, and has her Master of Business Administration (MBA). She puts her years of practical experience and her business knowledge to use to guide potential and existing proprietors in the health sector. Her book is aimed specifically at health entrepreneurs; however, it is a valuable read for any business owner. The experience and wisdom that Jennifer shares can be applied to achieving any worthwhile goal in life, including reviewing books for the Online Book Club!

Ms. Buchanan describes health entrepreneurs as “the owner, and many times the operator, of a private health-service business.” The author, herself, is a music therapist. Other examples in this category include massage therapists, physiotherapists, art therapists, people who run fitness/mindfulness/meditation/wellness centres and so on. The term “health” entrepreneur emphasises the idea that the goal of the business is not solely focused on profit, but on a wish to “serve the public’s needs and interests...” The focus is on striving to both “make a living and make a difference.”

I enjoyed the easy reading, easily relatable style of writing. The language was very accessible. The chapters were a good length and the quotes were very applicable and thought-provoking. The questions at the end of each chapter were pertinent, a good summary and a great way to go forward with the ideas presented. Engaging stories about a variety of businesses and groups were included to help illustrate the author’s points. The stories ranged from Bombas, The Sock Guys to the Famous 5 Foundation. In other words, from selling and donating socks, to working to bridge the leadership gap for women in Canada.

While I appreciated the writing style in general, some of the sentences were extra-long. Every so often, there were just too many ideas presented within one sentence and it got a bit confusing. The only other note is that the end of the last chapter was quite abrupt. After the friendly style throughout the book, it came to a conclusion rather suddenly. The Notes section followed immediately. The Notes were followed by the Acknowledgements and this very last section provided the sense of summing up and closure that was missing. I would have preferred the information in the Acknowledgements to be a part of the last chapter. This would provide the reader with a satisfying sense of completion.

Wellness Incorporated by Jennifer Buchanan was well-organized and well-edited. It had a few typos and grammar errors. However, they were minor in nature and a final edit should take care of them. There were some formatting issues when I converted the epub file to work on my Kindle. I lost a fair bit of the variety of fonts and the use of bold text to emphasis points from different sources. Hopefully, this aspect of the e-book can be improved.

I give Wellness Incorporated 4 out of 4 stars. The editing issues were minor. If possible, I would give it 3.5 out of 4 for the abrupt last chapter; however, this book is worth more than a 3! It has an excellent emphasis on determining core values and living them out in all aspects of life and business. I also respected the importance placed on finding the balance between making a profit and serving others. This is a book that includes both head and heart. It is an excellent tool for anyone who is considering running their own business. This would also be an enjoyable read for anyone who is interested in directing their life with a plan in mind.

Thank you so much for your detailed review. You writing captured the essence of the book without giving too much away. I'm glad to know that others can benefit from the book as well, not just those intending to go into a health-related business.

I love that she has so much experience and education, it gives her a lot of credibility. I’m very interested in a health centered career. Thank you for the review! I definitely won’t be downloading this book on my kindle.

Thanks for your comments - I hope you enjoy the book! As a note, the version I had for review was a pdf. If it is a proper Kindle version, it should be fine.
