How do you find a job? A simple question with an answer that is not simple at all, especially today. A job is necessary, but finding one proves to be a very hard task. So the question 'how do you find a job?' is one that proves daunting for almost everyone.
Dr. Tim Johnson states it clearly. His book, Finding A Job In Tough Times, is not a novel. It is a book that has only one protagonist and that is you, the reader. It contains a series of exercises which aim at helping you gain a better understanding of yourself. The exercises are accompanied by thought-provoking ideas and explanations about why he's asking you to take each step, what you can hope to accomplish with each exercise.
The book's structure is very helpful. As its title states, the main aim of the book is to help the reader find a job. However, the author understands that, to achieve this, we must start from ourselves. The exercises help the reader understand who he or she is. The author asks seemingly simple questions. How do you see yourself? How do others see you? How do you want your future to be? What are your abilities? We all think we know the answers to these questions, but if we take a moment to try and answer them, we see that it's a lot more difficult than we think. With the exercises that he suggests, the author helps you answer them.
In my opinion, the best thing about Johnson's book is the way he sees things. Yes, it's a book to help the reader find a job, but it does not treat you like just a job applicant. Johnson speaks to the reader with sensitivity and is truly the voice of reason. He emphasizes -and it is important- that your job is not your identity. Your job is not your life and your life is not your job. He also emphasizes the importance of values. No matter how rich your job makes you, it says nothing about you as a person. Statements that seem obvious, but I think we all make the mistake of forgetting them occasionally.
It is a book that, at first glance, seems like it's targeted at a very particular audience. One might think that reading it will only be beneficial to people who are currently looking for a job. I believe it will be truly beneficial to them, but definitely not only them. I think that Finding A Job In Tough Times can help anyone who's ever stopped to wonder 'am I on the right path?'. And I don't just mean a career path, but also the path of someone's life.
It is a great book and very well edited, so I rate it 4 out of 4 stars. It pushes you to create opportunities for yourself if you're having trouble finding them. It's motivational and optimistic, without ever being shallow. It might sound funny, but the first word that came to my mind when trying to describe the book was 'relieving'. It's relieving to have someone tell you 'it's okay to not know what your next move should be'. What makes it more relieving is that with this book Dr. Tim Johnson also tells you, 'let me help you figure it out.' And he does.
